FCPS Cares

Congratulations...

To Joe Lintott for being recognized as an employee who shows that FCPS Cares!

"When our son was struggling in math starting at the end of the first quarter, Mr. Lintott took the time to have a phone conversation with us about our concerns.  He worked with us to help come up with a plan to help our son fill gaps in his knowledge from previous years of math and to understand the current content.  We have seen our son improve not only with his grades in Mr. Lintott's class but his confidence has grown as well.  The child who said he wasn't good at math got an A on his last test.  The child who did not want to get extra help is doing so without any pushing.  This is all due to Mr. Lintott and the extra effort he put into strengthening the student/teacher relationship.  We would like to recognize Mr. Lintott for helping our child learn and grow, not only in math, but in the important life skill of recognizing a need for help and asking for it.  Thank you for all that you do."

Attendance Matters!

Attendance drives everything! It is tied to almost every aspect of school performance and future outcomes.

Consider these important and interesting facts about attendance:

  • Half of students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
  • Research shows that missing 10% of the school year (about 18 days total) negatively affects a student’s academic performance.  That’s just two days a month, and that’s known as chronic absenteeism.
  • Students who are chronically absent are over 7 times more likely to drop out.
  • Dropouts make about $1 million less over a lifetime than graduates.

Underclass College Planning Night

Tuesday, February 11th at 7:00 in the Library.

It may seem far away but in a flash your child will be applying to college. Jessica Grenfell, DSS, and Signe Yock, FCHS Parent & College Admissions Consultant, will present on what you can do now to make the college application process less stressful and possibly even fun.

We’ll show you free resources, points to consider for course selection, timelines, and how to approach the process.

Parents of 9th and 10th graders are encouraged to attend and 11th grade are welcome. Questions can be directed to Jessica Grenfell Jmgrenfell@fcps.edu

Calendar Reminder: Schools Closed on February 17 for Presidents Day Holiday

Fire Alarm Testing

The fire alarm system at our school will be inspected and tested during the week of February 10th.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Fairfax County Office of the Fire Marshal require Fairfax County Public Schools to test our fire alarm system annually. This test is very extensive, as we must inspect and test each and every fire alarm device. This testing can only be performed when the building is unoccupied; therefore, the typical hours of testing are from approximately 10:00 P.M. until 5:00 A.M., Monday through Friday. System testing can range from 1 day to 5 days, depending on building size.

In an effort to minimize disruption, the testing of the audible portion (horns) of the system is performed at the end of the total system test (the last testing day). The approximate amount of time that the audible portion (horns) are activated is one hour.

Food For Neighbors Red Bag Collection

The next Food For Neighbors Red Bag collection event is coming up on Saturday, March 7th.

At our January 11th collection event, we collected food (Red Bags) from 80 donors! Over 40 volunteers either drove to pick up those Red Bags or they sorted all of the food in the Jackson cafeteria. All of the contributions from the January event stayed within the LJMS community.

For our next event on March 7th, our goal is to have 200 committed Red Bag donors. We are currently about 50 donors away from meeting that goal. The more Red Bags we collect, the more food we will have to help support our school community. Two hundred committed donors would make a very big impact on families in our community facing food insecurity.

You can find more information on the Food For Neighbors Red Bag program, how to volunteer to support our goal, and how we implement the program at Luther Jackson at these links:
