From the Principal's Desk....

Dear Family Fairfax,

Another winter week ends in 50 degree weather and quite a downpour.  The parent coffee was in full swing when the rain was at its heaviest, and it took us all by surprise.  When I went to the lobby area to check in with our building engineer, the students heading in looked like it took them equally by surprise.  All ended OK and the day started with only the slightest of glitches.  A special thank you to the MANY support staff members who ensure that Fairfax is always up and running!

This week was National School Counseling Appreciation Week.  The food was abundant in the counseling suite, but when I asked one of our counselors what he appreciates most, he said a handwritten, meaningful note from a student means a lot to him. With the myriad college recommendations, academic guidance, and advocacy that our counselors give to our students each and every single day, consider encouraging your student to write a note of gratitude.  It is the little things that go a long way.

Good luck to our dive, swim, and track teams as they compete in Regional competition, and congratulations to our VHSL One Act for winning runner-up in the Patriot District competition.  Speaking of the Patriot District, last Tuesday, our gymnastics team clinched the championship here at FHS, with numerous athletes winning individual medals!   The athleticism was incredible, and we are looking forward to watching them as they progress onwards!  Greatest of skill (They don’t need luck!) to our wrestling team as they compete at West Springfield High School tomorrow.

If you haven’t seen the “one singular sensation,” A Chorus Line, this is the final weekend!   As many of you know, this is Mike Replogle’s (our Academy Musical Theater teacher) farewell performance as he is retiring this year, so if you haven’t made it, you still have three chances left! We are so fortunate to have Fairfax Academy here at Fairfax High School, with industry arts professionals providing a valuable and authentic learning experience for many of our students.

Wishing you and your family a restful weekend,

Erin

The First Chill Essentials Workshop was a great success!

All of the students signed up for the workshop because they wanted to improve themselves and learn how to balance their school and home life.  They had a wonderful time, were very engaged, and learned a lot. Vanessa Rutherford, one of the sponsors along with Ashley Curl, asked them at the end if they would want a part 2 (follow-up) and they all said yes!

Korean Visitors

Fairfax HS hosted Korean educators doing a two-week practicum with FCPS.  Erin Molek, Academy Career Experience Specialist, acted as their tour leader and snapped this selfie.

Fairfax Pride Nice to Know:

Welcome All New Parents to Fairfax!

To all New Parents at FHS,

You are invited and encouraged to gather with other Newcomer’s at Fairfax High School.  Please come to our next great informal “question and answer session.”  Come meet others who are also transitioning into their new community.  We are here for your support!  The next gathering will be February 18 at 6pm in the FHS library.  Directly following the Newcomer’s gathering will be the PTSA meeting at 7pm if you are interested.  It’s a great way to learn more about your school.  Come to both or just one event!  Whatever your schedule entails.  We look forward to meeting you!!

Mrs. Martin (Academy school counselor) & Ms. Molek (Career Experience Specialist) spent 2 hours with a group of 15 middle school students and three instructors from the McNair Elementary Boys & Girls Mentoring group. This is the second year this group from McNair has visited Fairfax Academy.

During “the tour” we took them to 5 Academy classes of the students’ choice to do interactive/hands-on activities correlated to the class, and learn ALL about what they do in the particular classes . (The students got to vote ahead of time to pick which classes they were most interested in).

They got to actively participate in each class – Ex: dancing, using autotune, creating a beat, taking photos in the studio, browsing the Fashion In Motion magazine… and they also got to see students perform and utilize professional equipment.

In addition, the middle schoolers got to hear from Academy students in each class (who attend a wide range of FCPS high schools) in regards to their middle/high school path  and what the Academy has meant to them and what careers they are thinking of pursuing ALL because of the Academy.

MySchoolBucks - Lunch Account

Have you checked your lunch account recently at MySchoolBucks.com?  We currently have many students carrying a negative account balance with our cafeteria.  Letters are being sent to the parent/guardian of these students and we would appreciate your prompt attention.  Thank you.
