Counselors' Corner

Welcome to Counselors’ Corner:  an occasional tip sheet from the Robinson Middle School Office of Student Services

SW SPOTLIGHT

by Kristen Licciardo, School Social Worker

February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of African Americans and the important role they have played in American history. The month was officially designated a holiday by President Ford in 1976, but can trace its origins as far back as 1926. Some African American social workers who have made significant contributions to the field include Forrester Blanchard Washington, who advocated for work opportunities for African Americans in the Roosevelt administration, and Dorothy Height, an important figure in the civil rights movement and an advocate for women’s rights. She was also born in Virginia!
