#OurFCPS Faces: Dan Reinish

Dan Reinish, Marshall HS teacher, talking with students

Meet Dan Reinish! Dan teaches English 10 Honors, IB (International Baccalaureate) Theory of Knowledge, and Photojournalism at Marshall HS. Dan is also the yearbook adviser. In that role, he "provides students with the skills, tools, and guidance necessary to produce responsible, high-quality journalism that tells the story of [Marshall's] school community." Dan adds, "I support my students by managing our student portrait days, coordinating with our yearbook publisher, and handling some of the publication’s budgeting and finances. I also currently serve as a co-sponsor of Marshall’s chapter of the National Honor Society.”

When asked what he likes most about his job, Dan says it's "getting to help my students create something that, for decades to come, will matter to them, to their friends, and to classmates they may never have met. There are tears some years on delivery day when we cut open the box for the first time because the students realize this, too. Though they had some help from me along the way, these students, for the most part, with all their typical teenage challenges in terms of timeliness, work ethic, relationships, and so on, did this unbelievable job themselves. They accomplished it. And seeing them realize that is incredibly rewarding.”

Dan was recently named a Special Recognition Adviser by the Journalism Education Association. He is one of only eight advisers selected nationally for this distinguished honor. “The yearbooks Dan has advised and the relationships he has with the students who make these books are a testament to his talent as an adviser,” said Meghan Percival, journalism adviser at McLean HS. “Under Dan’s guidance, the yearbook staff at Marshall have created publications that are not only beautifully designed and feature stunning photography, but they are also journalistic. Dan teaches his students the skills they need and then fosters an environment where the student leaders are empowered to make decisions.”

In his free time, Dan does “a lot of “techie stuff” like tinkering with computers, building websites, and coding. He also enjoys writing, photography, and taking care of the miniature poodle he and his fiancée adopted.” Read more about Dan.
