Mock Trial Award Winners

Hayfield’s award-winning Mock Trial Team turned in another outstanding performance at the Virginia Capital Region Mock Trial Competition on Jan. 25, earning second place. Team members did an excellent job of both arguing the case and acting as witnesses. Now they’re heading to the State Mock Trial Competition, which will take place in Richmond in March. Go Hawks!

AP Capstone Students at FCPS Science Teacher’s Winter Institute

On February 4, senior AP Capstone Research students, Sarah Syed, Luke Bulmer, and Abby Dyer were three of four students from FCPS to serve as panelists on the topic of inquiry at the FCPS Science Teacher’s Winter Institute. They helped our educators explore how the inquiry process could be utilized more in middle – high school science classrooms.

This is the first year for the AP Capstone Research class at Hayfield SS. The course follows the AP Capstone Seminar elective which is in its second year. Our student representatives are exploring the following topics of inquiry this year: “Identifying Genetic Associations Between Human Programmed Cell Death and Bacterial Altruistic Suicide” (Sarah Syed); “Sharing Wildfire Prevention Techniques to Reduce the Frequency and Severity of Wildfires in the United States” (Abby Dyer); “Exploring the Socioeconomic and Developmental Benefits of Rural Electrification in Malawi” (Luke Bulmer).
