Lemon Road Community News 2.2.20

Message from Mrs. Castillo

Twin Day

This short week ended with a bang! Freaky Friday, Twin Day, and Movie Night were tremendous successes. Thank you to everyone who helped their children organize a twin or triplet to dress with, wear Lemon Road spirit wear, and came Friday night. Toy Story 4 with popcorn was a great way to end the week as a community. A round of applause to our amazing PTA and Kristen Myers for organizing and orchestrating the full event. On Friday, many of our upper grade students also had the opportunity to share their writing with parents and peers. I visited sixth grade classrooms as they read from their poetry anthologies and fifth grade classrooms as they shared their narrative nonfiction books. Both events were a true celebration of learning and collaboration.

Next week, we hope to see many parents in for World Read Aloud Day on Wednesday. All classes will be celebrating with additional read alouds throughout the day by staff members or parent volunteers. This day is set aside to remind us how important it is to read aloud to children of all ages – even if they are proficient readers! If you are still hoping to read, please email your child’s classroom teacher to set up a time to come in.

Be on the lookout for report cards and important forms in next week’s Wednesday folder. The intention forms are crucial to help us plan for staffing and class sizes for the 2020 - 2021 school year.

On Friday at 8:15, we will host our February Principals’ Coffee! We have two requested speakers lined up – a presentation by our Occupational Therapist (Emily Salzinger) about developing core strength and fine motor skills at home and our parent liaison (Mabel Morales) about structuring your home for school success. Refreshments are always served, a Spanish speaking interpreter will be supporting parents, and all are welcome! Please remember when coming to school events during the day to bring your photo ID and arrive 10 minutes early to allow time for parking and checking in through our front office.

Congratulations to those who competed yesterday at the Math Counts competition! A big thank you also to Ms. Yockey, Ms. Roth, and all the staff who helped the students prepare for the challenging opportunity to show off their math and reasoning skills. Thank you for your continued partnership, I love serving with this amazing school community ~ Mrs. Castillo

Club Photos – Volunteers Needed

Polos

This Wednesday, February 5, Lemon Road students that participate in clubs and groups will take photos in the gym throughout the morning. It is important that all students wear their polos. If your child plays an instrument, is part of the SCA, is a patrol, sings in chorus, or participates in one of our clubs, their photo will be taken for the yearbook. We are looking for volunteers to help organize groups, ensure all students are wearing their school polos, and support the photographer.   Volunteers are needed between 8:30 – 12:00. If you available for any portion of that morning, please let the PTA know by email or just come by the front office Wednesday morning!

Kindergarten Orientation

K Orientation

Do you know a child who will be 5 years old by September 30, 2020?  If so, it’s time to register for Kindergarten! We are now taking kindergarten registrations for the 2020 – 2021 school year and planning has begun to welcome the new class of 2033!  Pass along the word across our community that our Kindergarten Orientation will be held on March 3rd 9:00-10:30 AM. We invite students and parents in to experience kindergarten. Doors will open at 8:30 with photos and light refreshments. Parents are encouraged to call or email Mrs. Vaughn at Lemon Road to schedule an appointment for kindergarten registration. Forms needed for registration can be found here. Registration is also open for Kindergarten Kick Start – a summer camp for rising Lemon Road Kindergarteners to get to know the school, routines and staff. Please help us spread the word to neighbors and friends with children ready to start Kindergarten at Lemon Road!

Friday Homework Club

Yearbook Cover

Four Kilmer Middle School students are completing their service learning project as a part of the National Junior Honors Society at Lemon Road! They have been tasked with developing and facilitating a project that will benefit the community. Here is their message:

For our project we want to tutor students at Lemon Road free of charge!  We hope our club will benefit Lemon Road students by improving their academics.  We are available to help in any subject your child wants to work on.  Beginning January 31, we plan to come to Lemon Road each Friday from 3:00 – 4:00 in the Library until March 20. Ms. Gabby Burke has graciously volunteered to sponsor us and will be present in the library. Please use this link to sign your student up for our tutoring club and note that students will be dismissed from Door #7 (kiss & ride door). We hope to support your children and have a successful club!

Respectfully ~ Allie Nassif, Bella Spignardo, Keira Fu, and Carmen Musallam

Positivity Project - Forgiveness

Forgiveness

I hope that you've had some significant conversations with your children this week on ways to support other people when they struggle -- and why that is such an important aspect on humanity. On Monday, we'll begin learning about forgiveness -- which is the ability to move past being injured and accept that people make mistakes. Forgiveness means that you forgive those who have done wrong. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance. Many who forgive have the ability to consider things from another’s perspective. For a 1-page overview of forgiveness, please click here and for a blog post with additional links to academic research into forgiveness, please click here.
