Parents as Partners - February Seminar on Equity

In response to the Family Engagement Survey administered during the 2018-19 School Year, Woodson is focusing on sharing information with parents to help parents improve their child’s learning and to identify and develop social and emotional skills for students to be successful.  In addition, we are looking for ways to maintain two-way communication between families and the school.

One way we are engaging families is through monthly parent seminars.  In addition to the PTSO meetings (held on the second Tuesday of each month), administrators and counselors will plan and deliver a monthly seminar based on various topics.

February Parents as Partners seminar will address Equity, Diversity, and Cultural Responsiveness and will take place on Tuesday, February 11th at 6 p.m. in Cafeteria A

At WT Woodson, we believe in a caring culture where all students are valued, respected, and appreciated. Each student has their own identity, culture, and tradition. In line with the activities that our equity leads implement around identity, culture, and tradition, February’s Parents as Partners seminar will allow parents to have a deeper conversation with their students.

Woodson Orchestra Performance

The WT Woodson orchestra will be performing at the University of Mary Washington on Sunday, February 16th, at 1 p.m.

Woodson Rifle remains undefeated after two matches this week, back at IWLA.  On Tuesday, Woodson matched up against West Springfield High School.  Junior, Tori Kopelen lead the team to victory with shooting a 292 with 19 of those points being 102 or greater.  Senior and Capitan, Stephanie Ricigliano, shot a 292 with 18  of those points being 10.2 or greater.  The final results were Woodson Rifle Varsity with an overall score of 1161 and the Woodson JV team having a combined score of 1131 to West Springfield's Varsity scoring 1129 and the West Springfield JV score of 1084.

Thursday found Woodson Rifle in one of their closest matches of the season competing against Lake Braddock Secondary School.  After two relays Woodson Rifle Varsity team won the match with a 1160 win over Lake Braddock's 1154.  These two teams came into the match with undefeated records and when all was done 6 points separated the two teams.  It was a night of personal bests and perfect scores being shot.  Junior, Joe Hall led the JV team and shot a personal best of 290.  Stephanie Ricigliano shot 100s in both prone and kneeling give up no points in those positions.  Victoria Kopelen, Meredith Ivey, and Nate Wehrlen also shot 100s in this match against Lake Braddock.  It was a great week for Woodson Rifle, being back home on electronic targets, personal bests, and perfect shooting in positions.  The week ended with Coach  Cliff sharing that Juniors, Meredith Ivey and Victoria Kopelen will be joining Stephanie in Captain duties for the rest of the year.

WTW Varsity Girls Basketball (15-4, 5-2 Patriot District) opened its week with a tough double overtime loss at South County, 60-52.  The starters scored all the points in this one.  Maggie McGuire exploded for a career-high 25 points in defeat, keeping the Cavs in it late.  Sarah Wilson and Abby Pesansky added 8 and Eunice Yoon 6.  With 7 seconds left in regulation, Anna Wiggins hit her second last-minute 3 pointer in the last two games to force overtime and finished with 5.

The Cavs bounced back at home on Friday for Senior Night with a thrilling overtime win over Lake Braddock, 52-51 to remain atop the Patriot District.  This one was closer than it should have been as the Bruins rained in 3s from everywhere in the 4th quarter and overtime to keep the game close.  Three Cavs scored in double figures, with Abby Pesansky scoring a season-high 18 to lead the Cavs.  Maggie McGuire added 16 to give her 41 over her last two games.  Anna Wiggins hit several big free throws in overtime and finished with 11.  Sarah Wilson scored 4, Kate Torgersen 2, and Amelia Noca gave a very gutsy performance to score 1.  Before and after the game, seniors Emily Allen, Maggie McGuire, Amelia Noca, Abby Pesansky and Sarah Wilson were honored as seniors and Woodson even honored  the Lake Braddock seniors with flowers before the game.  As parents, we are all very proud to be part of a school that represents its sports programs in this manner.  Next week, the Patriot District battles continue with West Springfield at home on Tuesday and at Robinson on Friday.  Nothing comes easy in this District where all 6 teams are good.  Go Cavs!

WTW Varsity Boys Basketball faced two tough opponents on the road this past week and lost to South County Stallions (53-62) and Lake Braddock Bruins (61-83).  Devin Cuviello led the Cavs with 21 points against South County and Andre Pacheco and Joe Pesansky contributed with 11 points each.  Pesansky also grabbed 7 rebounds and 7 assists against the Stallions. Facing the Bruins, Pesansky and Pacheco both went for 11 points, Cuviello had 9, and Moe Raff finished with 7 points. Xavier Barry also contributed with 6 points off the bench. In the upcoming week, the Cav boys will face West Springfield away and back at home for Senior Night against Robinson on Friday on 2/7.
