Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

We had a wonderful turnout for our Principal Coffee today!  We had Mrs. Muscar, Mrs. Crawford and Mrs. Giovanni present the Growth Mindset and how we are using this in our classrooms.  Parents visited third and fifth grade classrooms to hear students discuss productive struggle and how their brains can grow from mistakes.  Growth Mindset is directly linked to our School Improvement Goal:  Goal Directed and Resilient Learners.  We discussed how important it is for teachers and parents to be modeling the power of “yet” with their children.  Try asking your child tonight about a challenge they faced in school and a strategy they used to persevere.  Please look for two more opportunities this school year to come to a Principal Coffee and go on a learning walk to an Oak Hill classroom.  We are doing some fantastic work with our students!

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child's learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Tip of the Week

Math

As we have shared throughout the year, Math class today looks much different than it did when we, parents, were in school.  We have shifted from rote memorization to more problem based learning and application to real world situations.  We are teaching our students that math is everywhere and how to be critical thinkers in exploring possibilities.  This article from the National Education Association talks about just that.  This year, our teachers have been able to take part in an exciting learning opportunity.  Each grade level has 3 days of math labsites.  During each labsite teachers learn about a strategy that supports best practices in math instruction and then have the opportunity to push into a classroom and try it with our students.  Teachers are learning about ways to ask higher level questions, support students through productive struggle so that they can be resilient through hard tasks, and ways to look at data to inform small group instruction to meet the diverse needs of all students in our classroom.  By partnering with our families, we can all support our students to think critically about math in their everyday worlds.
