Principal's Message

Dear Hughes Parents, Guardians, and Students

This short week has flown by, but students are already catching the rhythm of the third quarter.  Today a paper report card will come home with your student with the Second Quarter grades.  Do recognize your student’s hard work and celebrate the accomplishments thus far this year!  Also, consider setting a goal for third quarter with your student either around grades or around personal social and emotional health.  New year, new possibilities!  We are pleased to recognize the 195 students who achieved an All A report card in Quarter 2 and the 329  students who earned the  A/B honor roll.  Congratulations for this high honor for so many in our community!

Sincerely,

Aimée Monticchio

Principal

Second Quarter Report Cards

Second quarter report cards were distributed in students’ 6th period classes today to be taken home. You may also view report cards in SIS on Saturday, February 1st.

Through ParentVUE, in addition to viewing report cards, you are also able to monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time.

Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. In addition, all students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Please see the links below for more information.

Second Semester Classes

Students with semester electives will have a new schedule when they return next Wednesday, January 29th.  The classes will also be posted in ParentVUE and StudentVUE for viewing.

Hughes staff (aided by elementary counselors and 6th grade teachers in the case of our 7th grade students) spend considerable time assisting students with their selection of appropriate courses. Since all decisions regarding staffing, instructional allocations, etc. are made based on those selections, change requests may be accommodated only under very limited circumstances for academic reasons. As an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program school, students become well-rounded by developing themselves in both the arts and design. We ask students to select elective courses in both areas.  Semester electives, as exploratory courses, will not be considered for course changes.

Academic Advising for Rising 8th and 9th Grade Students

Our Hughes counselors and counselors from South Lakes HS met with our current 7th and 8th students for online course selection last week.  Students selected their core courses and electives choices for the 2020-2021 school year in SIS. Parents, you can view the student selections in SIS. If students want to make changes to course selections, they can meet with their counselors. You can find more information about the academic advising process and course selection on our website: https://hughesms.fcps.edu/student-services/academic-advisingcourse-selection. Our current 8th grade students/rising 9th grade students have the option of taking a summer course. Find out more about online course offerings here. Please note - courses taken in the summer session following student promotion from the eighth grade are ineligible for removal from the high school transcript. Click here for more information.

High school transfer applications open on February 1st for curricular programs, like the International Baccalaureate Programs at South Lakes. If your student is assigned to Herndon, but you’d like them to continue to South Lakes to pursue the Diploma or Career-Related Program, check-out the FCPS page on student transfers (https://www.fcps.edu/registration/student-transfer-information) to find more information on the process and steps to apply.

Please note that while South Lakes does show up as Closed for Transfers on the county map they do remain open for Curricular Transfers (IB) or World Languages (German and Japanese). Those options should be available to families as they work through the online system.

AVID is now accepting applications for rising 8th graders. AVID is a full year elective where students learn college and career readiness skills along with strategies to help them be successful in challenging courses. (Learn more about AVID at LHMS here: https://sites.google.com/view/lhmsavid) Students must complete an application that they can receive from a teacher or counselor. There will be a session to help them complete the application on February 6th, during Return to Learn 6th period in Mrs. Burke’s room. The application requires a parent signature, so if you sign off before then, they can finish it up and submit it during school on February 6th. Interviews will then be conducted and we will contact your student to let them know if they have been accepted into AVID for next year. Please contact Kristina Burke (AVID Coordinator) at ktburke@fcps.edu or your student’s counselor if you still have questions.
