Invention Convention

      February 24, 2020. SHES Gym 6:00-7:00pm

Sleepy Hollow ES will hold its second Invention Convention on Feb. 24 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. This science event is designed to encourage students to apply basic science skills in a creative and productive manner. Participants are encouraged to identify a need, innovate an existing product,  or to solve a problem. The Engineering Design Process can be used by participants to guide their journey. The Engineering Design Process is a series of steps that engineers follow when they are trying to solve a problem and design a solution for something.

Students may participate on their own or as part of a team. Teams should consist of no more than 4 students. We are encouraging all students in Grades 2-5 to participate. Students have been using brainstorming strategies during STEAM class to come up with ideas. An information packet went home in yesterday’s Wednesday folder.

We need volunteers to make this event as successful as possible. Volunteer opportunities can be found be clicking on the following link

If you have any questions please reach out to Jenny Collins by email -  jacollins2@fcps.edu. We are excited to see our inventors’ creations.

We Have a Little Library !

You may have seen the new Little Free Library located next to the SHES outdoor classroom. It was a wonderful gift to our school and community from the Little Free Library organization https://littlefreelibrary.org/. This little library is a place to inspire readers as students and other people in our school community borrow a book to enjoy. The books do not need to get checked out; instead, people can feel free to select a book (and not be concerned if it doesn’t get returned!) or to leave and give away an appealing book that someone else might enjoy. It’s like a book exchange! The titles that are in the Little Free Library will change daily; we have started out with some books in Spanish and Vietnamese as well as English and hope more will be added. Take a book, share a book. Please direct any questions to our librarian, Barbara Oswalt, or to the school’s front office. Enjoy!

School Visits

It is a policy of Fairfax County Public Schools and Sleepy Hollow ES, that all visitors report to the Office. (A “visitor” is anyone, including a parent, who is not employed by Sleepy Hollow Elementary.) All visitors, family members, and volunteers are required to sign in at our visitor management system in the school office to improve the security of our students while they are in the building.  The system requires that our visitors and volunteers scan their licenses and obtain a photo label name tag before entering the classroom areas.  Please remember to bring your license or state issued ID card when visiting the school.  Please wear the badge where it can be seen, as it is for your child’s safety.

Supporting your Child at Home: Promote Development of Self-Regulation Skills

You can help your child build their self- regulation skills by using strategies like the one listed below. You can also talk to your child’s teacher about how your child is doing at school and how this compares with their behavior at home. If you and your child’s teacher use some of the same strategies, it will give your child an extra boost in developing their self-regulation skills.

  • Give your child lots of choices throughout the day so that they will be more likely to follow your commands when choice is not an option. For example: “It’s time to get dressed! What shirt do you want to wear today?” or “It’s time for bed. Which book should we read tonight?
  • When you need to give a command, make sure it is clear, simple, and specific. Your command should be a statement (“Pick up your blocks”) and not a question (“Don’t you think it’s time to pick up your blocks?)

Summer 2020 Enrichment Institutes and Camps

Enrichment institutes and camps focus on specific areas such as fine and performing arts, technology, study skills, science, and world languages.  FCPS and non-FCPS students are welcome.

Tech Adventure Camp (TAC), Institute for the Arts (IFTA), Elementary Institute for the Arts (E-IFTA), and the new CTE Summer Academy classes will be held at Fairfax High School.  Programs run July 6 to July 31, 2020.  Bus transportation is provided from select high schools and middle schools outside of the Fairfax High School pyramid.  Transportation to and from the selected high schools is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or student.

Grade level eligibility for each program refers to the current 2019-20 school year.  Click on central institutes and camps for additional information.

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology will host a technology institute for middle school students.

ACE enrichment classes stimulate students’ curiosity and provide creative learning experiences. ACE also offers a premier driver’s education Behind the Wheel program to prepare students to obtain their driver’s license.  Click on ACE enrichment classes for additional information.

Tips to Keep Your Family Fit Indoors

Scholastics (http://www.scholastics.com) suggest the following strategies to get your family moving all year-round.

  1. Designate an indoor action spot. If you have room, set aside a portion of your basement or family room for active play. Put up an indoor basketball hoop, tape a hopscotch outline to the floor, or make a track for ride-on toys.
  2. Move every day. Dancing, housework, and climbing stairs all help you stay fit and don't require extra room or gear. Have your child dance along to a workout tape or just some rockin' tunes or blast some music and parade through the house playing follow the leader.
  3. Find community resources. Try bowling, ice skating, swimming, or other indoor options. Check out whether your child's school or a local university or community center offer an "open gym" time, where you can go and shoot hoops or use other equipment.
  4. Be a cheerleader. In one study of 200 students in grades 2 through 11, kids of all ages said they wanted their parents to help them stay active. So, whether you join in the games or shout words of support from the sidelines, show your child that activity is a priority every day.
