After-School Program

We were thrilled to welcome the Student Representative of the FCPS School Board, Kimberly Boateng, this past Tuesday! Kimberly met with students from our Student Leadership Academy, Student Government Association, and National Junior Honor Society to discuss leadership and the importance of student voice. We appreciate her taking time out of her busy schedule to speak with our students!

This week’s ASP Student of the Week is Natalie Ferrufino-Reyes! Natalie demonstrated all of the IB traits (balanced, caring, communicator, inquirer, knowledgeable, open-minded, principled, reflective, risk-taker, and thinker) through her participation in Student Leadership Academy this week and her advocacy around environmental issues. Well done, Natalie!

Student Services Updates

The Poe MS Student Services Team held an Advisory Council meeting with parents, teachers, students and other community stakeholders in December to share information and gather feedback related to 2019-2020 department goals and programming.  Information was presented on supporting student attendance, Math 7 classes, student wellness, college and career readiness, and school engagement.  Stakeholders asked questions and shared valuable feedback at this meeting, and the team is working to incorporate their suggestions to improve student outcomes.

Additionally, the Student Services team will be applying to become a Recognized ASCA (American School Counselor Association) Model Program based on our data and programming from the 2019-2020 school year.  As a part of this process, the team revised and rewrote the Student Services mission and vision statements which is posted on the Poe website.  The team will submit the application in October 2020 and receive results in Spring 2021.

The Student Services team will reconvene on June 4, 2020 to review program goal data and gather feedback to drive programming for the 2020-2021 school year. Please reach out to the Poe Director of Student Services, Ms. Bianca Aiello, if you would like to become a stakeholder for future Advisory Council meetings.

Special Olympics

Polar Plunge

We are excited to announce that our Poe Special Olympics program will be participating in this year's Polar Plunge!  The Polar Plunge is a series of events hosted by Special Olympics Virginia at which supporters brave the cold and plunge into the icy waters to fundraise money for this important cause.  Poe will be going to the event on Saturday, February 22nd at Leesylvania State Park in Woodbridge.

If you are interested in participating or making a donation, please check out our Poe team page using the following link: https://impact.specialolympicsva.org/team/275560.  Additional information can also be found at: https://polarplunge.com/prince-william/.

50% of the funds we raise will go directly to our Poe Special Olympics program, with the other 50% going to Special Olympics Virginia.  We will be using our portion to pay for transportation to Special Olympics events, purchase equipment, and support our efforts around building an inclusive school community.
