We had a fun-filled week at Lemon Road as we brought quarter 2 of the school year to a close! Thank you to all our parents who came out to support our various events in the past week. First and foremost, the first ice skating fundraiser was a huge hit last Friday night. This week, during our monthly PTA meeting, our PTA board invited several organizations that provide aftercare to Lemon Road students. We are fortunate to be part of a community with so many resources! If you missed the meeting, be sure to reach out to the PTA if you are looking for ideas for your children after school, on teacher work days, or for summer camp near Lemon Road!
This morning, Lemon Road students participated in our annual sixth grade volleyball game. This is truly a fan favorite as each of our sixth grade classes play tournament style and then take on the staff! Also this morning our morning preschool class invited their parents in to school to their snowman making party and poem recital. Finally, this afternoon, first graders shared the culmination of their nonfiction writing unit with their parents.
We have officially reached the mid-point of the school year! I am constantly amazed by the growth of your children as I visit classrooms in such a short time. Thank you for sharing them with us! ~ Mrs. Castillo
As shared at the PTA meeting this week, Wednesday, February 5 is World Read Aloud day! We encourage all interested parents to participate by reading a book in any language to your child’s class, at lunch, or during specials. Be on the lookout for an invitation from your child’s classroom teacher or send them an email with times that work for you!

One way we celebrate the diversity of the Lemon Road school is to offer opportunities for our students to learn about the many cultures within our community. Throughout the month of February, our school counselors are organizing cultural shares in all classrooms schoolwide. Ideas for sharing include:
- Special celebrations/customs
- Cultural history
- Music/dance/arts
- Photos/artifacts
- Stories
- Maps/flags
- Traditional dress
- Games
- Crafts
Parents can sign up to visit with a class using the sign-up genius or reaching out directly to our counselors: Erica McKinney and/or Heidi Gillmore. Thank you for sharing your culture with us and our students!

Our next Principals’ Coffee will take place on Friday, February 7 at 8:15 AM in the cafeteria. We have two speakers lined up to have dialogues and share advice with our parents and family members! First, we will hear from Mabel Morales, parent liaison, about structuring your home for school success then we welcome Emily Salinger, Occupational Therapist, to share ideas for supporting your students with fine motor skills and handwriting. As always, a Spanish interpreter and a variety of school staff will join parents to facilitate the conversation. We always have coffee, tea, and refreshments and hope you can join us!

I hope your children have demonstrated their learning about perseverance this week. On Wednesday, we'll begin learning about the Other People Matter Mindset (OPM2) element of supporting other people when they struggle. Supporting others while they go through tough times is a critical piece of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. Talking through a problem is a common way to help a person who is going through a tough time. When thinking about how to help them through conversation, it can be useful to (a) validate, rather than dismissing, their feelings, (b) help them reappraise the situation, and (c) *carefully* point out logic/thinking errors that may block them from healing.
This week’s example is Austin Perine. Austin, who recently turned 6, works to feed the homeless in Birmingham, AL — and elsewhere. He delivers food and hugs with a message “don’t forget to show love.”

Dear Parents of Lemon Road,
We are eighth graders at Kilmer Middle School and are a part of the National Junior Honors Society. As part of our service learning project we are tasked with developing and facilitating a project that will benefit the community. For our project we decided to tutor students at Lemon Road. We hope our club will benefit Lemon Road students by improving their academics. We are available to help in any subject your child wants to work on. Beginning January 31, we plan to come to Lemon Road from 3-4 in the Library for eight weeks (finishing March 20). Mrs. Gabby Burke has graciously volunteered to sponsor us and will be present in the library. Please use this link to sign your student up for our tutoring club and note that students will be dismissed from Door #7 (kiss & ride door). We hope to support your children and have a successful club!
Respectfully,
Allie Nassif, Bella Spignardo, Keira Fu, and Carmen Musallam
