 Dear Floris Families –
Floris has been a buzz this week with learning and activities. On Thursday, Dr. Tisinger’s sixth grade class stepped back into 1775 to try and change history. They simulated a court trial where the colonists sued Britain for their independence in hopes of avoiding war. Witnesses included King George III and George Washington among others. In 3rd grade, Ms. Aker’s class made a human number line to help with the learning of rounding decimals and decimal number sense. And throughout the school each grade level focused their Positivity Project lessons on the “perseverance” of Martin Luther King Jr.
Congratulations to all our students for completing the second quarter and 1st semester of the 2019 – 2020 school year. Monday, January 27th and Tuesday, January 28th are student holidays. Progress reports will be sent home on Tuesday, February 4, 2020.

POSITIVITY CONCEPT WEEK (January 27 – January 31, 2020): SUPPORTING OTHERS WHEN THEY STRUGGLE
Next week, we'll begin learning about the Other People Matter Mindset (OPM2) element of supporting other people when they struggle. Supporting others, while they go through tough times, is a critical piece of being human.
There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include:
- listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it
- taking action to help people in need, or
- simply just being there and sitting together in silence.
Talking through a problem is a common way to help a person who is going through a tough time. When thinking about how to help them through conversation, it can be useful to (a) validate, rather than dismissing, their feelings, (b) help them reappraise the situation, and (c) *carefully* point out logic/thinking errors that may block them from healing.

Annual PTA Pot-Luck Luncheon - ***NEED YOUR HELP***
As you know this Monday and Tuesday are Teacher workdays. Staff will be busy planning fun and engaging lessons for your children over those days as well as attending meetings. Science Fair
Registration for this year’s Science Fair is open! All Floris students are welcome to participate in groups of 2 or more. Each team must have a parent coach to register. Registration closes on February 20th. Only one registration per team. Visit https://florispta.org to register your team now!

Friends of Floris is a single, straight-donation fundraiser, operated solely by the PTA. Donation starting at $80 per student or $150 for families with 2 or more. Our Next Box Top Store is Thursday, February 27th during ALL Lunchtimes!
Come shop the Box Tops Store in the cafeteria during lunch time. Floris PTA will have all types of goodies for you to “purchase” with box tops. We will have toys, stickers, pens, pencils and more! We have something for you, even if you have just one box top. Find a list of participating products on the box top website.
The store will return every Third Thursday DURING lunch periods (except December- there will no store during this month). Students must bring the box tops with them to lunch and based off the amount they possess they can make a “purchase.” NO CURRENCY IS NEEDED
