From the Principal's Desk....

Erin

Dear Family Fairfax,

Sometimes it’s the short weeks that feel the longest. With a four-day weekend upon us for our students, we know that means we need to finalize grades, and we have professional learning on Tuesday.  While your student enjoys some time away, think about us from time to time…hard at work!

Many of our community members and staff members have selflessly given a lot of time to plan for and coordinate the opening of FHS’s A Place to Eat.  This food and hygiene pantry has already had a number of visitors!  See the recent newscast here: https://wjla.com/news/local/new-food-pantry-at-fairfax-high-helps-students-in-need.  The Fairfax Connection will have an article soon with more information about the initiative and how you can support our students through donations.

Tonight, many of our music students will be participating in a Masterworks concert at Truro Anglican Church, and our basketball teams will play Woodson High School in yet another Patriot District matchup.  Swim and Dive will have their final dual meet of the season, Science Olympiad is off to MIT, and our Track team is headed to Richmond. With our biennial Academy performance of A Chorus Line opening next weekend-- great theater, music, athleticism and academics abound, and there is always something to do and students to celebrate.  We are lucky to be a part of this community!

We are always looking for more opportunities to recognize the great work being done and the activities our students are participating in—please remember to email Laura Beatty at lbeatty@fcps.edu with #NewsYouChoose or #NYC in the subject line.

I hope to see you soon at one of our upcoming events!

With Participation Respect Integrity Determination Empathy,

Erin B. Lenart, Ed.D.

Rebels Need to Know:

Course Selection 2020-2021: The culture of Northern Virginia around high achievement can be felt by our students.  They often report feeling the need to earn high grades, take on a large number of advanced courses, and often feel a risk of falling behind.  With that in mind, we emphasize the importance of balance in our students’ lives when they select courses. Please help us in highlighting the need for students to maintain a sense of balance.  When talking about courses and academic commitments with your student for next year, be sure to ask about their plans to be involved in a co-curricular or extra-curricular activity at school, or similar activities outside of school. It is important that these competing commitments are looked at together, so students select courses that make room for challenge and growth while providing them the time to take part in the many activities, including personal time, that support their development as healthy (emotionally, mentally, physically, and socially) teenagers.

Our juniors just started meeting with school counselors for academic advising and selecting courses for their senior year.  Counselors will start to meet with sophomores on February 5 and then freshmen on February 20.  When meeting with students, counselors help them choose courses that will both interest and challenge them, as well as ensure they are on a path to graduation. After your student meets for their academic advising session, you can view your student’s course selections in SIS ParentVUE for the 2020-2021 school year. It is important for you to review the courses with your student and communicate any desired changes before the deadline on June 12.

FAIRFAX HAS FREE PEER TUTORS

Parents, before you spend money and time on a private tutor, encourage your student to take advantage of the Peer Tutors in the Learning Lab. The Learning Lab is a 1-to-1 Peer Tutoring organization that assists will all types of learning. The tutors are specifically trained in progressing peers through the learning process. A Peer Tutor offers coaching and feedback; tutors will not write or complete work for clients. Tutors can also provide assistance with study skills, organization, note taking, or time management. The Learning Lab is open Tuesday-Friday during all lunches for walk-ins, and during Lion Time and after school by appointment. Email Mr. Friedman (dlfriedman@fcps.edu) for appointments or questions.
