Thank you to our Student Leadership Teams for presenting to our classrooms about The Crayon Initiative. We are excited to be a part of this wonderful program to help reduce waste.
Survey of Preschool Children
A “Survey of Preschool Children” eligible for kindergarten enrollment for the 2020-2021 school year is currently being conducted. We request that parents of students eligible for kindergarten complete and return this survey to our school’s office.
A child who will reach his or her fifth birthday on or before September 30 of the school year is eligible for kindergarten.
We also request that you share this information with any parent of a rising kindergarten child in your neighborhood that may not have a child in our school and is not aware of this survey.
FCPS Safe Routes to School
FCPS Safe Routes to School will be applying for another VDOT Safe Routes to School grant at the end of February. Part of the application requires parent input. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey (link has been corrected) about how your child arrives and departs from school, as well as issues affecting your decision to allow or not allow your child to walk or bike to school. Your opinion matters and helps to ensure that grant funds are made available to FCPS
Immersion Program Registration!
FCPS offers elementary immersion programs in five languages.
Online registration for Kindergarten & First Grade Immersion programs open on January 27, 2020 and will close on February 20, 2020 at 4 p.m.
Click this link for more information as well as Information Meeting Schedules.
Cold Weather Dress
With the cold weather upon us, we try to have recess outside as much as possible (excluding when the National Weather Service issues a wind chill warning). Please make sure your children are prepared to play outdoors (jackets, gloves, and hats). If you need help with any of these resources, please contact any of our school counselors.
Kindergarten Orientation
There will be a Kindergarten Orientation meeting at Orange Hunt Elementary School on Thursday 23rd April at 4PM for students eligible for kindergarten in August. We also would like to invite rising kindergarten children to join us at that time for a tour of their classrooms. We encourage parents to schedule to register their child prior to Kindergarten Orientation. You may contact us at 703-913-6800 or email laakofiohite@fcps.edu to schedule an appointment.

On to another very appropriate trait for the start of the new year, perseverance.
WHAT IS PERSEVERENCE?
You complete what you start despite obstacles. You never give up.
The concept of perseverance can most often be found in one’s active pursuit in overcoming obstacles. Perseverance is a uniquely human characteristic that identifies an individual’s ability to spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals. Those who persevere are able to set goals for themselves and then take active, calculated steps toward those goals. People demonstrating high levels of perseverance are able to handle significant, sometimes repeated, setbacks in pursuit of goals.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
For individuals, persistence can be directly connected to an individual’s ability to be successful throughout their life. Those who persevere through setbacks often reap the benefits of the success gained by refusing to give up. Sometimes, this comes with the added benefit of increased knowledge and skill as a result of the work needed to achieve. Perseverance is also connected with bravery. Persisting in a task and failing, can result in depleted self-esteem. Therefore, it takes bravery to persist in a task despite the fear of failure. On a group level, perseverance can be contagious. A single group member’s ability or willingness to persevere can have a substantial impact on those working with him/her and the team. Groups that show high levels of perseverance are able to achieve goals they may not have believed possible. The results benefit both individuals and the group. They will be more likely to: enjoy the victory; persist in the future when facing challenges; improve their skills and abilities; and have a greater belief in their capacity to overcome obstacles and achieve goals.

Tips for Elementary School Parents: Do You Monitor Your Child's Screen Time?
There are positives and negatives to screen media for children. But one thing's for sure, today's children spend an increasing amount of time watching screens. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that parents develop a screen use plan for their child. Your plan should take your child's development into account and provide consistent rules about media use. It should also ensure that your child's screen time is balanced with plenty of time for sleep, exercise, and non-screen recreation.
Take time today to evaluate digital media use in your home. Is your child spending too much time watching TV and videos, playing electronic games, surfing the web or texting? Is it affecting success in school? If so, it's time to set some limits. To plan appropriate media use:
-
Pay close attention to how your family uses digital media. Where are the TVs and computers located? How many hours does your child spend in front of a screen?
-
Learn more. New apps and video games come out all the time. Find out what your child is playing. Ask other parents what they recommend.
-
Make a plan. Keep TVs and computers out of your child's bedroom. Put both where you can see them and be aware of what your child is watching. Figure out how much recreational screen time you will allow your child. Then establish a screen-time schedule for your family and stick to it. Establish screen-free times and zones in your home—during homework time and mealtimes, for example. In addition, set an electronic device curfew one hour before bedtime. To use the AAP's media plan calculator, go to healthychildren.org/English/media.
-
Share recreational screen time. When your child does watch TV or videos, or plays with video games or apps, join in. Interact with your child. Talk about what you are seeing and doing.
-
Offer choices. Suggest productive activities for your child when electronic devices are turned off, such as reading, doing puzzles, playing an active game and talking with family.
