Principal's Message

Dear Hughes Parents, Guardians, and Students

We have finished the first semester on a strong note here at Langston Hughes.  Yesterday afternoon we enjoyed the Winter Wonderland Dance sponsored by our SCA, and students will have Monday and Tuesday off while teachers grade papers and calculate final marks for the Second Quarter.  Report cards will go home with your student Friday, January 31, and can be viewed in ParentVue on Saturday, February 1.  Any student with a semester elective will change for the Third Quarter.  Students may already view second semester courses in SIS StudentVUE by clicking the Grade Book tab and then clicking on Third Quarter.  All students will receive a paper copy of their schedule Wednesday, January 29 when they return. Thank you for your continued support of our work here at school.  We appreciate your partnership as we head into our spring semester and get closer to our state SOL exams.

Sincerely,

Aimée Monticchio

Principal

The excitement builds as Phase One of the renovation progresses.  Keller Brothers Inc., our General Contractor, is to be commended for working through the cold without a roof in place yet!

End of Second Quarter/ Second Quarter Report Cards

Parents, please make sure that you have a SIS ParentVUE account. Through ParentVUE, you are able to monitor your student’s attendance, grades, and assignments at any time. You can also view your student’s report card on SIS ParentVUE. While we will send home copies of report cards with students next Friday, you will also be able to see your student’s report card grades as soon as they are available if you have a SIS ParentVUE. Report cards are available for view in SIS on Saturday, February 1st.

Once you have activated a ParentVUE account for an FCPS student, you will keep the same account until the student graduates. In addition, all students in the same family can be accessed through the same ParentVUE account. SIS/ParentVUE can be accessed using an app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

Please see the links below for more information.

Second Semester Classes

Students with semester electives will have a new schedule when they return next Wednesday, January 29th.  The classes will also be posted in ParentVUE and StudentVUE for viewing.

Hughes staff (aided by elementary counselors and 6th grade teachers in the case of our 7th grade students) spend considerable time assisting students with their selection of appropriate courses. Since all decisions regarding staffing, instructional allocations, etc. are made based on those selections, change requests may be accommodated only under very limited circumstances for academic reasons. As an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program school, students become well-rounded by developing themselves in both the arts and design. We ask students to select elective courses in both areas.  Semester electives, as exploratory courses, will not be considered for course changes.

Hughes Staff Members are looking for prizes from community businesses and parents to include in our weekly raffle which supports our initiative. Please drop off any of the items listed on the flyer to the main office between the hours of 8am to 3pm Monday - Friday.
Thank you so much for your consideration and support as we implement this initiative and encourage and teach students in the community.

AVID is now accepting applications for rising 8th graders. AVID is a full year elective where students learn college and career readiness skills along with strategies to help them be successful in challenging courses. (Learn more about AVID at LHMS here: https://sites.google.com/view/lhmsavid) Students must complete an application that they can receive from a teacher or counselor. There will be a session to help them complete the application on February 6th, during Return to Learn 6th period in Mrs. Burke’s room. The application requires a parent signature, so if you sign off before then, they can finish it up and submit it during school on February 6th. Interviews will then be conducted and we will contact your student to let them know if they have been accepted into AVID for next year. Please contact Kristina Burke (AVID Coordinator) at ktburke@fcps.edu or your student’s counselor if you still have questions.
