WTW PTSO WeMail - January 21st

It takes a village…

And the village needs you.  The PTSO is looking for a volunteer (or two!) to participate in the PTSO Board nominating committee to identify candidates to fill vacancies on next year's 2020-21 PTSO Board and standing committees. We have a volunteer to head the nominating committee, so we’re just looking for a few additional volunteers to help out.  Interested or have more questions? Please email Melissa French at wptsopres@gmail.com.

Curious how to balance AP vs Honors vs Gen Ed classes?

Our Parents as Partners series in January will focus on balance as it relates to student class selection for the next school year.

To build on last week’'s curriculum and rising 9th grade parent night, parents are invited to visit pre-selected classrooms to observe and participate in a short overview on balance as it relates to scheduling classes.  By giving you a  look into the classrooms and the current syllabi for the classes, we will be able to help guide your child in their course selections for next year.

These structured classroom observations will take place on Wednesday, January 29th either from 8-11am or 11-2pm.

Sign up is required for either morning or afternoon classroom visits on Wednesday, January 29th, please use this SignUpGenius.  Note: There are limited slots available.  Please sign up ASAP as we will not be able to add any additional spaces once they are filled.

We look forward to sharing our classrooms with you.  If you have any questions you can email Amanda Burke, Assistant Principal at ajburke@fcps.edu

Winter Sports Highlights

Woodson Rifle team continues to have an undefeated season.  December 19th found them competing against Arlington's Washington and Liberty rifle team.  Captain and Senior, Stephanie Ricigliano, led the team to a solid victory with a score of 1155 WT Woodson to 1032 Washington and Liberty.  After a two week break from competition WT Woodson rifle team came back with a solid performance against Yorktown Patriots.  Junior, Victoria Kopelen, led the varsity team to another solid win shooting a personal best of 296.  Woodson athletes dominated the competition Thursday night against Yorktown taking the top eight places, these athletes included - Victoria Kopelen, Nate Wehrlen, Stephanie Ricigliano, Rose McClelland, Victoria Cross, Kyle Barron, Yannie Chang, and Joseph Stefanski. The rifle team will travel to Arlington for their next meet on January 13th.

On Monday, January 13th, the athletes traveled to Arlington to compete against Wakefield High School.  This meet had them see the extra challenge of shooting on paper targets, where every shot required a subtle change to their NPA. This added dimension did not slow them down. The Varsity Rifle Team shot a combined score of 1156 to Wakefield's 1052.  Junior, Meredith Ivey, led the team shooting a 292 with 18 x's.  She shot a perfect 100 in kneeling.  Teammate, Victoria Kopelen shot a 292, as well with 15 x's and a perfect 100 in prone.  Captain Stephanie Ricigliano shot a 100 in prone, too.  The Woodson Junior Varsity team won their match, with Sophomore, Kyle Barron leading that team to its win, shooting a 284. Next week sees the team traveling to Maryland to compete against Landon.

WTW Varsity Girls Basketball (13-2) continued Patriot District play by defeating Lake Braddock on the road, 42-35.  Abby Pesansky paced the Cavs with 10 points and 16 rebounds.  Eunice Yoon and Sarah Wilson scored 9 each, Maggie McGuire contributed 8 with 13 boards, Anna Wiggins 4, and Kate Torgersen 2.  The next night, the Cavs beat Falls Church at home, 54-34.  Eunice got hot late and finished with 17 to lead the Cavs, with Anna scoring 11.  Amelia Noca broke open a close game in the second quarter by hitting three straight 3s to score 9.  Abby also scored 9, Maggie 5, Kate 2, with Sarah adding a free throw and 6 assists along with her all-world defense.

To cap off a perfect 3-0 week, the Cavs traveled to West Springfield and dismantled the Spartans, 47-26, in a battle for first place among teams both ranked in the Northern Virginia Top 10.  The Cavs’ effort on both sides of the ball was astonishing in handing the Spartans one of their worst home defeats in program history.  Eunice Yoon again led the Cavs with 14, hitting three 3s in the 3rd quarter to put the game out of reach. Sarah Wilson scored 9 and notably shut down the Spartans’ leading scorer.  Abby Pesansky also added 9, Maggie McGuire 8, Allie Maahs 3, Anna Wiggins 2, Kate Torgersen and Zoe Hite 1 each.  Next week the Patriot District battles continue with Robinson at home on Tuesday and at Fairfax on Friday.

The Woodson Cav Boys Basketball team split this week with a loss at home on 1/14 to Lake Braddock (74-103) and a win at home on 1/17 against West Springfield (48-45).   Joe Pesansky led the team with 21 points and 11 rebounds against Lake Braddock and 12 points and 7 rebounds against West Springfield. Moe Raff scored 16 points and John Faulkner chipped in 11 points against Lake Braddock; while Donovan Boyce had 11 points and 6 rebounds against West Springfield.  The team sits at 1-2 in district play and will face Robinson HS away on 1/21 and be back home against Fairfax HS on 1/24.
