Glasgow Community:

On Tuesday afternoon, Glasgow faculty and staff came together to recognize the nominees for the FCPS Outstanding Awards, as well as announce our school level winners in the following categories: Outstanding Teacher, Outstanding New Teacher, Outstanding Operational Employee, Outstanding Professional Employee and Outstanding Leader. Thank you to those of you who nominated a staff member back in November/early December. Congratulations to the school level award winners:

  • Outstanding Teacher - Kaitlyn Marmarou, Science Teacher
  • Outstanding New Teacher - Megan Radek, Spanish Teacher
  • Outstanding Professional Employee, Emily Boydstun, School Counselor
  • Outstanding Leader - Katie Madigan, Assistant Principal
  • Outstanding Operational Employee - Gloria Anchundia, Office Assistant

Special thanks in advance to the Glasgow PTA for sponsoring a Salad/Potato Bar next Tuesday,January 28. Our staff is always so appreciative of this event. If you would like to volunteer, see below for more information.

This week, we also hosted our Rising 6th Grade Open House. It is one of my favorite nights of the year as we get a chance to meet our new students and families. This night also gives us a chance to show off our amazing teaching staff and ways that we support our students in their learning in the classroom and their socio-emotional development. As I mentioned at the event, I am also going through this transition as a parent for the first time, so I recognize how daunting this transition may be for our new families. I have included links to all the presentations below. If you continue to have questions about the transition, please feel free to reach out.

Getting Ready for High School

2020-2021 Course Registration for Rising 9th Graders - Glasgow Student Services is excited to meet with your 8th graders to register them for next year’s courses! Glasgow counselors are meeting with students one-on-one during their Health & Physical Education classes for academic advising and reviewing course selections. After meeting with their counselor, 8th graders will be bringing home the course selection sheet for your review.

New for this year, students are now able to enter their course selections on their own through SIS StudentVue prior to meeting with counselors. Parents will also be able to view their student’s course selections in ParentVUE when they are entered. You may help your student through this process by using the “How To” guide.

In order to make changes to course requests, parents of rising 9th graders will need to contact the student services team at Justice HS no later than March 1.

Sign Up for Weekly Progress Reports: All parents/guardians of middle and high school students who have registered for a SIS ParentVUE Account and have a primary email address recorded in SIS ParentVUE can receive Weekly Progress Reports via email. This report provides a summary of your student(s) grades for the current quarter.

To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE Account and first verify that you have a primary email address within the system. It is listed under the “My Account” tab. If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports and click on update account. Once confirmed, parents/guardians are able to activate and select their preferences for receiving these reports within the SIS ParentVUE “My Account” tab.

Weekly progress reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email. FCPS Elementary Schools do not use the SIS grade book and therefore are not included in these reports. For questions about a specific progress report or grade you can login into your SIS ParentVUE Account to find detailed grade book information. Additionally, your student’s teacher is always the best resource to answer any grade book questions that you may have. Weekly Progress Report Parent Quick Reference Guide.

TJHSST Admissions - Semifinalists Just Announced - Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology semifinalists were announced this Friday, January 17 through the online system. Glasgow students that are selected as semifinalists will need to send out teacher recommendation request through their online system as soon as possible..

Parents please encourage your student to start planning now which teachers they will request recommendations from if they become semifinalists. TJ is looking for students to obtain 2 teacher recommendations; one must be a 7th or 8th grade math or science teacher, the other can be any 7th or 8th grade teacher. The recommendations are done online only and submitted directly to TJ by each teacher. Semifinalists will meet with our TJ counselor liaisons for more information about the process and reminders.

If you have any questions please reach out to our TJ Liaison Counselor Greg Franz at gdfranz@fcps.edu or (703) 813-8733.
