Dear Fort Hunt Families,
A wonderful 2nd week as principal here at Fort Hunt! This week I completed my 57th “meet and greet” appointment with teachers and staff. I have been working hard to hit the ground running, to personally get to know the school team members and connect with students and parents. I love moving around the building between appointments to peek in on students and see the great work of our teachers.

Please welcome Mr. Glen Mourning as our new 5th grade language arts/social studies teacher.
Mr. Mourning is joining us from a charter school in DC! Last week was Mr. Mourning’s first week at Fort Hunt and he is hitting the ground running!

I am happy to share that we have recently hired Vickie Theodoropoulos, an experienced elementary teacher for our 4th grade team. Ms. Theodoropoulos begins her new role January 29th. Welcome to Ms. Theodoropoulos! We continue to work on a long term solution (for this year) for Ms. Kattula’s classroom. We hope to have an update soon. Stay tuned!
Upcoming: On January 21st, I look forward to visiting with parents for another PTA “Meet the Principal” reception at 5:30pm at the Creekside Community Center. Hope to see you there!
Mr. Slayter
Principal
Dear FCPS Families,
The winter months are upon us and that can often bring challenging weather conditions. We want to remind parents, students, and staff members that FCPS monitors weather conditions daily in case school must be cancelled, delayed, or closed early due to weather. Parents and students should have a well communicated family plan in place in the event of emergency weather situations.
The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority whenever a decision is made regarding school closures and delays. FCPS reviews information from emergency management and state highway officials about road conditions, and school personnel inspect the conditions of roads, sidewalks, FCPS parking lots, and bus lanes. This information contributes to the final decision about a delay or closing.
Due to the speed of updating, the official @FCPSnews Twitter account is generally the first and fastest mode of communication. Other communication channels will be updated as quickly as possible including email, text, website, other social media, and local news stations.
FCPS tries to make decisions in the evening, realizing that parents need time to make proper arrangements. But when there is a great deal of uncertainty, we wait to receive the latest morning forecast. In that case, the superintendent decides whether to delay or close schools by approximately 4:30 a.m.
More information about weather cancellation procedures is available online.
Thank you for your support and cooperation.
