Mrs. Choate's Chat...

Dear Glen Forest Community,

I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and enjoyed our first snow day! Based on meteorologists’ predictions, weather in January and February should be mild but by March we will start seeing snow storms. So, if they are right, don’t put those snow boots away!

As we enter the new year, we are busy preparing our students for a variety of assessments required at the mid-year point of the year. We will be assessing children’s reading and math growth, as well as their language development. Many times, parents want to know how they can help. Honestly, you’ve already been helping! When you read with your children every day, ensure they do their homework and attend school, you have been helping and modeling that school is important! Once the assessments are completed, teachers will be able to share with you our “next steps” in developing instruction that meets the specific needs of your children.

This week we were honored to serve as a host school for educators from Lower Merion School District in Pennsylvania.   We were specifically tasked to highlight how our teachers in our primary grades (kindergarten through 2nd grade) infuse the Advanced Academic curriculum to ensure rigor for ALL children. Of course, our teachers were amazing, and the visitors were treated to kindergarteners doing analogies, 2nd graders using the CSI strategy (Color, Symbol, Image) during their poetry unit, and 1st graders participating in a Jacob’s Ladder task sequencing the stages of a caterpillar from a poem they had read aloud. Our final presentation was from a 1st grade teacher who taught our Young Scholars program last summer and is utilizing various AAP curriculum pieces throughout the school day. I am so incredibly proud of our staff! They did an excellent job representing their colleagues and the collective work our staff is committed to, to ensure ALL students receive rigorous tasks and critical and creative thinking skill opportunities.

In the upcoming weeks, we are hosting a variety of evening events and day-time workshops. Please take a moment to mark your calendars and join us!

Sincerely,

Cindi Choate
