Dear Halley Families:

As many of you are aware, we have had both students and staff get sick with the flu and our Fairfax County Health Department would like to remind us of recommendations to help protect us all from influenza and other respiratory illnesses:

  • Vaccinate your child and yourself against influenza this year and every year. As long as influenza is circulating in our community it is not too late to get a vaccine.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Teach your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds.  Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself. If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers may be used.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw tissues in the trash after use.  If tissues are not available, cover coughs and sneezes with your upper sleeve
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.  Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with individuals who have influenza-like symptoms.
  • Monitor your child for signs of influenza-like illness.
  • Do not send any child experiencing influenza-like symptoms to school.  If your child comes to school with the symptoms described above, he or she may be sent home. Keep your child home and away from others until the child has been symptom free and without fever for at least 24 hours without the use of medication (i.e. he or she should not attend school, school functions, sporting or extracurricular activities, or leave the home except to seek medical care).
  • Consult with your child’s health care provider regarding possible use of medication that treats influenza if your child has a chronic medical condition, an illness that weakens their immunity, or who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy.

The Office of Food and Nutrition Services is excited to announce the launch of a rotating Salad Bar Special Event: Parfait Day! Salad Bars will transform for the day into build-your-own Parfait Bars, where students can make yogurt and fruit parfaits as their choice of entree.

Our special day will be on February 6th!

Here are the details:

Make a Yogurt and Granola Parfait for lunch!

For one day, Halley’s Salad Bar will turn into a Parfait Bar where students can build their own yogurt and fruit parfaits as an entrée. A Parfait includes:

  • Fat-free vanilla yogurt
  • Whole grain granola
  • Cinnamon-spiced apples and other fresh fruit

This weekend let us all remind our students how special and privileged they are!   One wonderful quote of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education." Our hope is that our parent, school, and community partnership remain strong for years to come, as you raise such amazing, caring, critical thinkers. Be safe this weekend and enjoy this time of reflection.

As always, thank you for your trust. Please let us know if you ever have any questions or concerns.

Mrs. Peerman, Dr. Simpkins and Ms. Johnson

Absences Add Up

As we begin to develop new routines and habits for 2020 we want to make regular school attendance one of them. With the winter weather, this is the time of year children’s illnesses can take a toll on school attendance and it’s important to get your child to school every day possible. Below are some resources and tips to help your child stay healthy and in school.

When planning travel throughout the year we ask to plan and schedule trips when students are not in school. Below are links to calendars for the 2019-2020 school year and 2020-2021 school year. Thank you for your advance planning to keep your child in school.

We recognize there will be times your student will be out sick or have a need to miss school. If your Halley Hornet will be absent from school or will be arriving late, please be sure to leave a message on our attendance line at (703) 551 5757 or email HalleyElem.Attendance@fcps.edu
