FSES kindergarten students have been studying different versions of the Gingerbread Man. After reading the original version, the students synthesized the information to predict what would happen in each of the other stories. They talked about the characters, setting, problem, and solution. The sudents also talked about the moral of each story. Here are some of their thoughts:
“Never trust a fox!”
“Don’t get too close to the soup!”
“Never trust a smart cookie!”
“Never run away, because someone might have something they want to teach or show you!”
“Learn from other people’s mistakes”
Mimi Jung is the latest addition to the Franklin Sherman family. Ms. Jung has been working as a preschool teacher for the last nine years. She has a son who just graduated from the Coast Guard Academy and a daughter who is in the eighth grade. Ms. Jung enjoys movies, traveling, and generally just spending time with kids and listening to what they have to say. She is very happy to be at Franklin Sherman and is excited to be working with our kindergarteners.
On Tuesday, January 14, Franklin Sherman families enjoyed an evening of science. Franklin Sherman teachers partnered with the Children’s Science Center to bring their Family Science Night Program to FSES to help encourage students to take interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects, as well as to encourage students to develop curiosity in everyday life situations. During the event, students and their parents had the opportunity to engage in many fun, yet educational, science activities. Thank you to our staff and volunteers who made this night a great success!

The Franklin Sherman staff would like to express their gratitude to the PTA for providing dinner on Tuesday, January 14, prior to Family Science Night. We greatly appreciate the thoughtfulness of our hard working parents!
FSES is excited to continue the Positivity Project this school year! Each week a new character trait is explicitly taught to our students. While the level of depth varies by grade, the entire school learns about the same trait at the same time. This week, students will be focusing on perseverance. Students will learn about what it means to persevere and ways in which they can build and recognize that trait in others. By recognizing and appreciating one another’s strengths, students will also be adopting the “other people matter” mindset.
Please join us at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 22, in the FSES library for our next PTA meeting. Following the meeting, we will be welcoming Tianja Grant from the Family Engagement Office. She will present information on raising resilient children. Resilient children are equipped to meet life’s challenges and resist pressures to use tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs. Discussion topics include fostering resiliency, using family and cultural strengths, and accessing school and community resources.
A Parent’s Journey: Keys To Successful Vaping Intervention
Thursday, January 23
7 to 8:30 p.m.
McLean Community Center
Are you worried that your kids or their friends are vaping? Do you know what to do when you find the evidence of vaping to create a safe and healthy path for quitting? According to the Fairfax Youth Survey results for 2018-19, more than 30% of surveyed students at McLean and Langley High Schools reported having vaped in the past month compared to 20% of high school students across Fairfax County and the nation (https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health-humanservices/fairfax-county-youth-survey). Kids in our area are vaping MORE than in the rest of the county.
This free evening event will include details on prevention and intervention with presentations by the following:
- McLean mom Gail Embt will share her parenting journey when teen vaping hit close to home and how her family conversations changed from confrontation to cooperation in order to change her teen’s behavior.
- A local pulmonologist, Dr. Jeff Hales, will present the latest medical updates on the health risks of vaping in youth.
- FCPS vaping expert Brian Maslowski will discuss FCPS policies regarding vaping.
- Local substance abuse specialists will discuss how to engage kids and how to develop a plan for changing behavior.
- FCPD McLean Precinct law enforcement officers will discuss specifics of the law regarding vaping.
All will be available to answer questions you may have on how to keep your tween or teen safe and how to intervene if you are dealing with someone who is vaping.
Parents who want to be part of the solution will come away with tools to assess tween and teen risk and intervention approaches from real world experiences. Even if you don’t think your kids are vaping, you need to come to this event so that you can learn how to talk to your child about the dangers of vaping and what to do if you catch them with vaping products. More details about Gail and her journey can be found here: https://www.breakthevape.com/about. For questions about the program, contact info@breakthevape.com.

Let’s continue this great tradition of support to our community! Your child can be a Heart Hero by learning about a heart healthy lifestyle, spreading the word, and raising funds to help children with special hearts. Look for the flyer that was sent home in your child's Wednesday folder!
How do we sign up?
