Arabic and First Graders
First grade students learned about seasons, changes in seasons, the weather and clothing through taking a virtual trip to Egypt (videos of dances, wedding, museums). The students made a comparison between the climate in Virginia and in Egypt, clothing we need for different kinds of weathers. They learned colors, numbers and they practice a simple Debkka dance steps.

SHES January Safety Drill
Every school facility in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly. Now, we, along with other Fairfax County schools, have scheduled to conduct four lockdown drills this school year.
A lockdown is a well-established procedure designed to protect students and staff members in a case in which there might be threats of violence within a school. During a lockdown, students remain in their classrooms or are escorted to classrooms if they are in the halls, and all interior and exterior doors are closed and locked. Once the facility is rendered safe and students are accounted for, the school is returned to normal operation.
While we have no reason to believe that any threat of violence will arise, it is always best to be prepared. It is important to train students and staff members so that we can effectively implement a lockdown in the event one becomes necessary. Training helps ensure a calmer, more effective lockdown.
Sleepy Hollow has conducted two lockdown drills so far this school year. Our third lockdown drill of the year will be conducted on Friday, January 17, 2020. This drill is generally short, typically lasting no longer than a fire drill. It will be conducted in collaboration with the FCPS Office of Safety and Security.

What’s a Socratic Seminar?
Socratic Seminar(Click link to learn more about a Socratic Seminar)
Students in 5th grade read an article and prepared for a Socratic Seminar by making a reflection and creating open-ended questions. The topic for this seminar was based on a 16-year old girl who attempted to circumnavigate the globe on her own. Students debated whether her parents should have allowed her to go on her own and if this was something that they would want to take part in.
Students practiced being Collaborators by analyzing and constructing arguments and positions to ensure examination of a full range of viewpoints.

GPS Bracelets/Devices
A parent or guardian who wishes for their child to wear a bracelet or device with GPS capabilities, such as an AngelSense, to school must now request principal approval for the device. Parents or guardians should utilize the new Request for Principal's Approval For Student Use Of GPS Bracelet/Device (SS/SE-349), located on the internet and intranet. If the device also includes communication features, parents must agree to disable these features during the school day and, if applicable, while on the school bus. After receiving the request, principals should complete the bottom portion of the form, file it in the student’s scholastic record, and provide a copy of the completed form to the parent or guardian. A new request needs to be completed before each school year begins.
