Two-Way and World Language Immersion Programs

Online registration for Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) lottery for two-way and world language immersion programs will open on Monday, January 27.  Current prekindergarten students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2020-21 school year.

Kindergarten immersion programs are available in Korean at Colin Powell Elementary School and Spanish is available at Bailey’s, Lake Anne, Laurel Ridge, London Towne, and Rose Hill Elementary Schools. First grade immersion programs are available at 12 elementary schools and are offered in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

In the immersion program, students spend approximately half of each day learning mathematics, science, and health as well as a portion of language arts in the target language. The other half of the day is spent learning social studies, language arts, and the Family Life Education portion of health in English.

There are no formal criteria for enrollment, but the program is only open to residents of Fairfax County. Online registration is available. A SIS parent account is required to complete the application.  If a student is not currently enrolled in FCPS, registration at the base school for the upcoming school year will be required to obtain a SIS parent account.

Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, for the first grade immersion program and by 4 p.m. on Friday, March 20, for the kindergarten immersion program. Families will be notified regarding lottery outcomes via email on Thursday, March 5, for the first grade immersion programs and on Thursday, April 2, for the kindergarten program.  Transportation will not be provided for students residing outside the immersion school’s attendance area.

On May 25, 2017, the Fairfax County School Board approved a one-time non-refundable pupil placement fee of $100 per student, Notice 5922, Section XVII.  This one-time non-refundable fee will apply to all students accessing immersion program placements outside of their base school and will be integrated and collected within the online final school selection and acceptance process.

Parents who are interested in the two-way or world language immersion programs in FCPS are encouraged to attend one of the following informational meetings.  All meetings are held at the school identified.
