Happy New Year Graphic

It doesn't seem possible, but we are rapidly approaching the end of the first semester!  Where has the time gone?  Here are just a few reminders as we get ready to begin the second half of the year.

  • Check with you student's teacher to see what classroom supplies they might need or what supplies they need for your student (hand sanitizer, lotion, wipes, etc.)
  • Make sure your student has an adequate, weather appropriate change of clothing at school
  • Clean out your student's back pack
  • Clean out your student's Wednesday folder
  • Make a donation to support Animal Assisted Instruction (aka Pet Therapy)
  • Keep your student home if they have vomited or had diarrhea or a fever within the last 24 hours
  • Use the Attendance form on the website or email attendance to let us know if your student will be absent for any reason.
  • Review the FCPS policy of weather delays and closings

Classroom Connection

Student using a switch to help pour detergent

From Heather Edwards and Krista Williams class

In room 344, students have various school jobs they work on throughout the week. Our school jobs are to water the plants and take care of the school garden as well as to fill laundry detergent containers so that students can do the laundry. We have plants inside the building as well for students to take care of, even during the winter months. Students work on their school jobs almost every day and do a great job!

Students in our room are also learning about continents this year. During the month of December and January, we have been learning about Africa. This week, we focused on the country of Morocco. Students explored music from Morocco by listening to different musicians and sharing their thoughts on them. They also explored food from this country by smelling common spices used in Moroccan dishes and making a Moroccan drink.

From Sara Lansang's Class

This month in room 341 we will be focusing on New Year’s traditions around the world.  We will be looking at the US, Mexico, Greece, Switzerland, Denmark and Australia.  We will be focusing on how each country celebrates the New Year and what traditions they have.  We will also try to do some of those traditions such as walking around the school with a suitcase for good luck.

We will also be continuing in our love of baking.  Each week we bake a new type of cookie or make a different food recipe.  When cooking the students help by counting to make sure we have all our ingredients, press the next button in order to turn the page for the recipe, counting out our scoops to equal the measurement given, and everyone loves operating the mixer by activating a switch. To see more photos of the class participating in this activity, visit our website!

Each month we go on a Community Based Instruction trip to a grocery store where we go and locate ingredients from a shopping list and then purchase them; some use a Big Mac (single cell communication device) in order to interact with the cashier and some use their individual communication device.

Plans for the Key Center yearbook are well underway!   This year, families have the opportunity to purchase an ad or senior dedication for the low, low price of $12/half page or $20/full page.  Watch for additional information in next week's Wednesday folder. The deadline for purchasing an ad will be February 28.  You will also want to purchase your yearbook before that time, before prices go up!

Benefit for Australian Wildlife!

graphic of Australian wildlife

As you are no doubt aware, terrible wildfires continue to consumes thousands of acres of Australian land.  It is estimated that over 800 million animals in Australia have been affected since September and the fires continue to take a catastrophic toll on the animals.  Key Center is having a bake sale on Friday, January 17.  The proceeds will go to WIRES (wildlife rescue) in Australia.  Please send in any baked goods to sell, or feel free to make a donation to  help benefit these defenseless animals.

Happy New Year!

Our classrooms are busy with activity and we have many things scheduled to broaden student experiences. Jeff Wolfe returned to conduct another day of Drumming with students.  Next week we’ll have the band Country Current, THE Navy’s premier country-bluegrass ensemble coming in to entertain our entire community of students, staff AND parents!  We hope to see some visitors as we utilize this event to also celebrate our Purple Star School Status, a recognition for schools who offer a welcoming environment to military families.

Thinking of military, thank you to those who made donations to our Adopt a Soldier event! These items will be sent over to Hayfield Secondary School for the Martin Luther King Day of Service this Monday Jan 20. A few members of our staff will be on if anyone wants to join us.  The event is 9 am-12 pm and is great for students looking for additional service learning credit.

This is the time of the year when we get snow and ice which creates school closure decisions.  Just last week we had our first ‘early release’ day in a few years.  Please remember to stay in touch with the news on days when we may have poor weather. In addition, it’s important that you help the school keep your contact information current, and all families will need to list additional friends or family who can meet your child should we release early.  If your contact is not on the emergency contact page, students will return to school for you to pick up and travel could be dangerous in poor weather conditions.

As always, if we can assist you or your family in any way, reach out to us at the school’s main number, we’re here to help you navigate resources.

Don't forget...
