Attendance Matters!

Attendance drives everything! It is tied to almost every aspect of school performance and future outcomes.

Consider:

  • If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unexcused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom.
  • By middle and high school, chronic absence is a leading warning sign that a student will drop out.
  • Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom, disrupting pacing and slowing down instruction.

Science Fair Winners

Congratulations and thank you to all of the students and faculty members who participated in this year’s science fair! Great job Jaguars!

Academic Advising

Academic Advising Season has begun. Starting January 2020, students will meet individually with their school counselor to choose their courses for the 2020-21 school year. It is so important that parents and students are informed of their academic options. Families are encouraged to talk with current teachers for their recommendations for next school year. This year, students will choose classes via their SIS Student accounts. After the students choose their courses via their accounts they will meet with their counselor to confirm the selections. Parents can always view the course selections via their SIS Parent account. If you do not have an active account, please contact the Parent Resource Center to obtain a login.

There are numerous ways to stay informed about course selections and graduation requirements which include:

  • Elective information: will be available online. More info to come. We encourage students to attend the Academy Open House which are at the Academy sites. Registration for Academy courses is done with the counselor and must be completed by Friday, February 28th.
    • Fairfax Academy: Tuesday, February 4, 2020, 6:30pm-8pm.

    • Marshall Academy: Wednesday, January 29, 2020, 6-7:30pm

  • Luther Jackson Middle School course advising: Falls Church HS Counselors are presenting to 8th graders at LJMS on Thursday, January 30th during school.

  • Poe Middle School course advising: Falls Church HS Counselors are meeting with 8th graders at Poe MS on Thursday, January 23rd during school.

  • Glasgow Middle School course advising: Material was shared and the Glasgow counselors are advising 8th graders.

The goal of all of these activities is to ensure that our students are making the best decisions when it comes to course selections. It is not easy to go through a schedule change so it is extremely important for students to choose wisely and be informed about their decisions. After March 6, 2020, requests to change any course selection will be made via the school counselor based on space availability. After June 12, 2020, Falls Church Student Services cannot honor any requests to change elective courses so it is vital that students choose wisely. Please speak with your student’s school counselor if you have any questions or reach out to Jessica Grenfell, jmgrenfell@fcps.edu.

THE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL by Anton Chekov

Directed by Laurel Gilbert (grade 11)

THE MARRIAGE PROPOSAL tells the hilarious tale of the young man who wants to propose marriage to a farmer’s daughter at the turn of the 20th century.  All would go off without a hitch if it weren’t for the arguments that directly conflict with the purpose of the visit.  Time: approximately 30 minutes.

TRACKS by Peter Tarsi

Directed by Beth De Marco.  Student Assistant Director- Laurel Gilbert (11)

In TRACKS, a group of strangers meet in a dirty subway station.  They have arrived with limited personal belongings, their watches have stopped and they claim to be in different cities.  Soon they learn there is no way out of the station.  A thoughtful drama, TRACKS has a running time of approximately 40 minutes. TRACKS was performed at the Virginia Theatre Association conference earlier this year from this group of Theatre 2, 3, 4 students and will be performed again on January 27th at the VHSL competition at Mt. Vernon High School.  All are welcome to come to the festival at MVHS on January 27!

THE YELLOW BOAT by David Saar (due to some technical elements of the show, THE YELLOW BOAT will switch time slots with HENRY’S LAW.

Directed by Beth De Marco with special guest artist and assistant to the director Deidra Starnes. Deidra comes to us from 1st Stage Theatre in McLean, VA as a professional actress and Theatre artist.  She has worked in many D.C. schools and was just seen in AMADEUS with Folger’s Shakespeare Theatre Company.  She is also in AMEN CORNER in January with the Shakespeare Theatre.  She is volunteering her time and we are so grateful to have her work with us!

THE YELLOW BOAT is the endearing true story of a young boy named Benjamin who was born with hemophiliac’s disease.  After an infected infusion of Factor 8, Benjamin becomes infected with the HIV virus.  We will be using multi-media and song to present this beautiful dramatic piece.  Running time, approximately 40 minutes. Warning:  This play contains material that could be triggering for some viewers.  Counselors will be present at the performance to serve our audience members.

HENRY’S LAW by Stacie Lents

Directed by Dagan Rogers (grade 12)

HENRY’S LAW tells the story of a socially awkward, but brilliant student named Max, who crumbles under the devastation of cyber bullying. The play begins when Max finds himself tutoring Sara, the most popular girl in school, in chemistry. Warning:  This play contains material that could be triggering for some viewers.  Counselors will be present at the performance to serve our audience members.

BROADWAY SWEETS

Auditions will be held after school on Friday, JANUARY 17 after school from 3-4PM in the choir room. Once auditions are complete, participants will be selected based on the quality of their audition and the needs of the show. All students who audition will be placed in the show, whether it is performing a solo or a group selection.

Workshops will be held with each act selected for the cabaret during the month of January. During the week of the cabaret, students will be required to attend scheduled rehearsal blocks (between 3:30 and 5:30) on January 28 or 29, and entire rehearsals 3:30-5:30 on January 30 and 3-7 on January 31. Please do not audition if you cannot commit to the rehearsal week. Those selected will also be expected to learn up to 3 company numbers for the show.

About the Theme - Switching Places

There are always songs that you love as a performer, but are from a role that you would never be able to play on stage - parts for the opposite gender or a role for someone much older or younger than you. Now is your time to explore these songs and bring them to life! Ask Mr. Redden-Liotta for guidance and to see if your song is appropriate for the performance.

PLEASE JOIN US FOR THE NEXT BOOSTER MEETING, THURSDAY JANUARY 16 at 6PM in room 181!

Would you like to be a part of our program?  Do you have students that are interested or might be interested in Theatre arts at Falls Church High School?  PLEASE come to our booster meeting!  All FCHS staff and supportive adults are welcome!  Please write Mrs. De Marco at eademarco@fcps.edu if you have any questions!
