Kiss & Ride Reminder
When entering Kiss & Ride, please follow Marshall Pond Road to Pond Spice Lane to Burke Centre Parkway and follow the entire loop to exit on to Burke Centre Parkway. There has been an increase in U-turns and near-miss accidents on Pond Spice Lane and on Burke Centre Parkway. Following this route will ensure smooth traffic and safety for all.
Bus Lane Reminder
As a reminder, cars cannot pass busses with the flashing lights on, or if children are loading or unloading. Additionally, it’s unsafe to go the opposite direction in a bus lane or to squeeze by a bus, even with the lights off.
Safety Drills
Safety is our number one priority at school and drills are practiced throughout the school year. A lockdown drill will be conducted sometime in the next couple weeks. See below for details about the various drills we practice at school.
-
Bus drills are conducted each semester to teach safety rules to bus riders.
-
Fire drills occur weekly during the first 20 days and monthly thereafter.
-
Lockdown drills are 4 times a year to practice what would happen if a threat entered the school building. There are 2 in the first 20 days, 1 in January, and 1 any other time during the school year.
- A tornado drill is conducted each year in March. Teachers review safety procedures to follow in the event of a tornado.
FCPS Emergency Planning and Crisis Response
Fairfax County Public Schools' main goal is to keep students and staff safe at school. Our crisis and emergency response plans have been cited as a national model. We continually work with county, state, and federal health, safety, and emergency personnel leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential threats. We also drill for emergency situations and then review and revise plans as needed.
Terms and Procedures for Emergency Response
It is important that all public safety officials, school administrators, communication officers, and members of the media understand and use a common terminology (Lockdown, Secure the Building, Shelter in Place, Stay Put Stay Tuned). For parents, understanding the terminology may ease fears and concerns during an incident. For more information on terminology as well as FCPS Emergency Planning and Crisis Response, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/resources/safety-and-transportation/emergency-planning-and-crisis-response .
Click here for an article about Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers. As always, our counseling and clinical staff are here to provide additional support for children and families as needed.
Did you know that there is a School Psychologist assigned to EVERY school in FCPS?
FCPS School Psychologists are working hard to make a positive impact on the academic and social-emotional development of all FCPS students through the provision of mental health services that build resiliency, life competencies, and good citizenship. Please follow them on Twitter @FCPSpychs to find out more about how they impact students’ lives every day!
