Deer Park News and Information January 9, 2020-Clarification on Spirit Night

Being Your Best Bucky

This month we begin our new Deer Park character strength program, Being Your Best Bucky.  Self-Control is the character strength for January and students will be engaged in activities, books and discussions to further develop their self-control.  Our program will cover four character strengths:  Self-Control, Kindness, Teamwork and Perseverance.

Self-control is learning to manage emotions.  By learning self-control, kids can make appropriate decisions and handle difficult situations in a way that leads to positive results.  Self-control is an essential skill to help us meet our goals, which could be getting along on the playground to holding a job.  Self-control can be strengthened through teaching, modeling, practicing and positive reinforcement.

Rocks with Cops

Have you heard of the rock painting movement where kids and adults are hiding painted rocks across the country? The Kindness Rocks Project “encourages people to leave rocks painted with inspiring messages along the path of life.” People are playing hide-and-seek with painted rocks in hopes of spreading kindness and joy to those that discover them. “One message at just the right moment can change someone’s entire day, outlook, life!”

Join us on Saturday, January 18, at the Sully District Station to paint rocks with Cops! Join us anytime between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. We will have supplies but please feel free to bring your own as well.

Make sure to RSVP here: http://bit.ly/rockswithcops2 so we can ensure we have enough rocks!

Paint + Hide + Find + Share = Joy

Any questions, please email Community Outreach Officer Meg Hawkins at Megan.Hawkins@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Spotlight on Art

This week you might recognize the artist but she is not quite like the other Spotlight Artists.  We are highlighting our artist in residence, Ms. Crabtree!  This past weekend, Ms. Crabtree hung her first exhibit at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, in Oakton VA.  The exhibit called, Calling All Angels, is comprised of fifty-three paintings created in the last year.  The opening reception is Sunday, January 12th at 12:30.  Ms. Crabtree will be there to welcome the community and celebrate her work.
