SHES January Safety Drill
Every school facility in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has in place crisis management and emergency preparedness plans, designed with the help of the school system’s security planning staff, local law enforcement, and emergency management officials. Plans are regularly reviewed and updated. The plans include procedures to respond to critical incidents, like fire and tornadoes, and we practice these drills regularly. Now, we, along with other Fairfax County schools, have scheduled to conduct four lockdown drills this school year.
A lockdown is a well-established procedure designed to protect students and staff members in a case in which there might be threats of violence within a school. During a lockdown, students remain in their classrooms or are escorted to classrooms if they are in the halls, and all interior and exterior doors are closed and locked. Once the facility is rendered safe and students are accounted for, the school is returned to normal operation.
While we have no reason to believe that any threat of violence will arise, it is always best to be prepared. It is important to train students and staff members so that we can effectively implement a lockdown in the event one becomes necessary. Training helps ensure a calmer, more effective lockdown.
Sleepy Hollow has conducted two lockdown drills so far this school year. Our third lockdown drill of the year will be conducted on Friday, January 17, 2020. This drill is generally short, typically lasting no longer than a fire drill. It will be conducted in collaboration with the FCPS Office of Safety and Security.
What’s Happening in 5th grade Local Level IV?
Math PBL: How can you, as a mathematical analyst, create a timeline to depict both positive and negative integers based on your birth year?
The Integer Timeline Project gave students an opportunity to use their emerging integer skills in a concrete way. This project highlights using a number line to communicate integer value. Students are also able to show their understanding of absolute value.
Students practiced being Critical and Creative Thinkers as part of the Portrait of a Graduate framework. Students used information in novel and creative ways to strengthen comprehension and deepen awareness.

Dress for the Weather
The weather this time of year can be unpredictable, with temperatures sometimes changing quickly throughout the day. Dressing in layers is often helpful. Please make sure your students are coming to school with coats, hats and gloves, if appropriate, as they still go outside for recess whenever possible.

Reading Specialist Substitute Mrs. Carrie Cantillana
Please join us in welcoming long-term Reading Specialist substitute, Carrie Cantillana. She was born and raised in Virginia. She grew up in Winchester, where her parents still live.
Teaching brought her to northern virginia 32 years ago. She began and ended her full-time career as a first-grade teacher, with a little second grade experience sprinkled in the mix. She was certified as a National Board teacher in 2000 and renewed her certification in 2010. In addition, she has Reading Recovery training. Teaching literacy is her passion.
When she’s not working, she loves to spend time with her husband, Pablo, and her son, Santiago. They enjoy relaxing at the beach, traveling, and playing board games. She is truly happy to be working at such a welcoming and wonderful school.
