Emergency Drills at School

Every January schools in Fairfax County are required to practice a lockdown drill, so this is a good time to remind families of the different kinds of safety drills we practice in our schools.  During a drill, teachers are instructed to calmly remind students what they would do in that emergency, in the event of a lockdown students are always told it is a drill, students practice what to do, afterwards students may ask questions, and then instruction returns to normal as quickly as possible.  Every effort is made to not alarm students and an emphasis is placed on just practicing so we know what to do to keep safe.

Families are informed if there is ever an actual emergency by email, text, letter, and phone depending on the severity of the situation.

In FCPS we practice fire drills every week for the first month of school and then once a month for the remainder of the school year.  We practice lockdown drills twice in the first month of school, once in January and once later in the year.  We practice tornado drills at least once a year in March.

Deadline for AAP Level IV Referrals

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is due no later than January 9, 2020.  Parents are welcome to submit early, but no late referrals will be accepted.  We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision.

If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, there are two parent presentations available on the AAP public website  that have the same information that was shared at our local school information meetings.

Referrals can be submitted to the office or to Tiffany Reed who will be taking on the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher role.  They will be accepted at any time up through January 9.
