2. Joey Pouches Project

Joeys in Pouches

In February, Woodson Drama tech theatre classes will be participating in a special project with the Animal Rescue Craft Guild.  As part of their sewing unit, students will make Joey Pouches, Wallaby Bags, and Bat Wraps for animals rescued from the Australia fires and we need your help!

All of these items can be made with repurposed material. We are in need of these donations (used and clean):

  • All types of flannel – sheets, pillow cases, flannel pajamas/pajama pants
  • Fleece fabric and/or blankets
  • 100% cotton t-shirts
  • Old sweatshirts
  • Needles, spools of thread, seam rippers, irons, or any other sewing items you no longer need

Please drop off any items in the box marked, “Animal Rescue Woodson Drama” in the main office throughout January.

If you have any questions about appropriate donations, please email Terri Hobson at tjhobson@fcps.edu.

3. To our Military Families

Do you have a family member who is deploying?

Student Services wants to provide support to your student before, during, and after the deployment.  If you feel comfortable, please let your student’s counselor know about any current or upcoming deployments. Thank you!

FanQuest Spirit Week

4. Woodson FanQuest

FanQuest is a Special Olympics and Unified Basketball Tournament at WT Woodson High School, on Saturday January 18th.  Our athletes with special needs rarely get the chance to shine center court, and this is their chance.

Admission is FREE and doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a special tailgate carnival and the first game will begin at 7:00 p.m. Come and watch our double header games from 7-7:45 p.m. and from 7:45-8:30 p.m.

5. Volunteers Needed for Science Fair

The Woodson Science Department is looking for volunteers to judge our school Science Fair. The fair will take place on Thursday, January 30th from approximately 9 a.m.- noon.

Anyone with expertise or background in Science and Engineering is welcome to come judge! Please email Allison Adams at agadams@fcps.edu if you are interested.

6. Partners for Safe Teen Driving Seminar

A Partners for Safe Teen Driving parent/teen seminar is coming up next week on Monday, February 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

This is one of the state mandated programs where the parent(s) and the teen attend a 90-minute program on traffic safety and teen driving issues.  Families only need to attend one of these programs during the school year the student is enrolled in classroom driver education (10th Grade).

Do not be late - you will not be admitted to the auditorium after 7pm.

Questions? Please contact David O'Hara at DGOHara@fcps.edu.

Gina D'Angelo

Welcome back to Woodson, Gina D'Angelo!  Gina (WTW Class of '06) is our new Administrative Assistant and joins Jackie O'Brien on our main office team.  You will see her welcoming smile on your next visit to the office.

7. 2020 FCPS Gap Year Fair

FCPS School Counseling Services and Go Overseas are hosting the 9th annual FCPS Gap Year Fair on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at George C. Marshall High School from 6:00-8:30 p.m.  This event is for high school students and parents who are interested in learning more about the variety of experiences available and growing array of gap year opportunities.

The evening will begin with an informational presentation in the auditorium from 6:00-6:45 p.m.  Immediately following, the program fair, with representatives from over 40 programs offering gap year opportunities, will take place in the school cafeteria from 6:45-8:30 p.m.  Students are encouraged to pre-register for this event.  For more information, visit USA Gap Year Fairs.

In the event of inclement weather, the snow date and location will be Friday, February 7, 2020, at George C. Marshall High School from 6:00-8:30 p.m.

8. Nominating Committee for PTSO Needed

The PTSO is looking for a volunteer (or two!) to participate in the PTSO Board nominating committee to help identify candidates to fill vacancies on next year's 2020-21 PTSO Board and standing committees.

We have a volunteer to head the nominating committee, so we’re just looking for a few additional volunteers to help out.   We would love to have this committee filled by the end of December if possible. Interested or have more questions? Please email Melissa French at wptsopres@gmail.com

9. POGPOL Tip of the Week

Over the next several Fridays we will share various pieces of the Portrait of a Graduate Presentations of Learning (POGPOL) pilot that we are engaged in at Woodson.

There are five attributes of the Portrait of a Graduate.  They are: Communicator, Collaborator, Ethical and Global Citizen, Creative and Critical Thinker and Goal Directed and Resilient individual.

Each week we will share information and skills related to each attribute.  This week we will focus on the Collaborator.

Collaborator

  • Respects divergent thinking to engage others in thoughtful discussion.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work interdependently within a group to promote learning, increase productivity, and achieve common goals.
  • Analyzes and constructs arguments and positions to ensure examination of a full range of viewpoints.
  • Seeks and uses feedback from others to adapt ideas and persist in accomplishing difficult tasks.

12. Woodson HS Academic Advising

Yesterday, Thursday, January 9th, Woodson HS staff began working with students on the course selection process for the 2020-2021 school year.

Each teacher will meet with students individually across January 9th (Odd Day) and January 10th (Even Day) during their normal scheduled class time to provide students with guidance on course options available next year and to provide students with their feedback of the course(s) that would be the best fit. Teacher feedback for students will be based on demonstrated work ethic in the class, assessment grades, and applicable testing. This is an important step as we strive to help students and parents navigate the course selection process.

After these advising sessions, students will meet individually with school counselors, according to the timeline below, to select their courses for the coming year. It is very important for students to choose courses carefully as changes after the new school year begins may not be possible because of class size.

Following the individual counselor and student advising meetings, counselors will print a copy of the students’ selected courses for them to take home.  Students’ course selections are also viewable in SIS.  We strongly recommend students to consider the teachers’ recommendations when selecting courses for the upcoming school year. If your student selects a class that was not recommended by the teacher, you will be notified and are encouraged to discuss your student’s selection with him/her.
