Inclement Weather Information

When FCPS cancels or delays the opening of school due to inclement weather or other emergencies, staff, students, and parents are notified in multiple ways as soon as the decision is made.

FCPS' official Twitter account, @fcpsnews (with the blue check mark), is where you'll first see closing or delay announcements. That's because we've found Twitter to be the fastest, most effective method of disseminating news. Additional communication channels used to announce a delayed opening or closure include FCPS’ public website, email, text, Facebook, local television and radio stations, and Channel 21. Subscribers to the Delayed Openings and School Closings email on News You Choose will also be notified.

Please keep in mind that there may be a delay from the time messages are transmitted to them being received by users. More than 588,000 emails and texts are being transmitted during every weather closure or delay. However, FCPS has no control over how long it takes cell and internet service providers to distribute emails and texts to customers.

Please view FCPS' Weather Cancellation Procedures page for more information on weather closings and delays.

Deadline for AAP Level IV Referrals

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is January 9, 2020.  Parents are welcome to submit early, but no late referrals will be accepted.  We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision.

If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, there are two parent presentations available on the AAP public website that have the same information that was shared at our local school information meetings.

Referrals can be submitted to the Oak Hill ES Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, Jane Wheeler, at any time up through January 9. If you have questions, please contact Jane Wheeler, AART, at jgwheeler@fcps.edu

Tip of the Week

Math Tip

Happy New Year!  As we think of ways to support our children at home with math, we can find many ways to build on math concepts in our daily activities.  One way is to cook or bake with your child.  Measuring ingredients, doubling ingredients, reading directions and noticing fractions can all be related back to math.  Some connections you could make are adding (1 cup + 1 cup), fractions (1/2 cup, ¼ teaspoon), measurement (capacity, units of measure, etc.), following step by step directions, and multiplication/division (doubling or halving).  There is math all around us; it is just a matter of taking the time to make the conversation to connect your child’s learning.
