Dear Colvin Run families,

On behalf of the CRES staff, I would like to wish our community a safe and joyous holiday. The teachers and I are especially appreciative of the kind words, supportive actions, and generosity that you, our community, provide our staff. We are thankful to be in such a caring and supportive school community.

The holiday break arrival provides a perfect opportunity to spend time with your family, before the busy traveling and celebration of the holiday season begins. It provides us with a rare opportunity to spend extra quality time with those we love and an opportunity to reflect on the many gifts that we enjoy, as members of the Colvin Run community. This week, your child will have a chance to hang their “Hope for the New Year” on our Hope Tree, located in the Front Lobby.  As this calendar year ends, I hope you and your family can reflect on 2019 with fondness and look forward to the potential of 2020. We wish you a wonderful holiday and a Happy New Year.

Take care,

Mr. Junge

Rise Against Hunger Event-Save the Date (All Grades)

Event Date: Saturday, February 8, 2020

Last year’s Rise Against Hunger event was a huge success and provided a service learning opportunity for children and adults of all ages.  In partnership with Rise Against Hunger, the Langley pyramid (Langley High School, Cooper Middle School, Churchill Road Elementary, Colvin Run Elementary, Forestville Elementary, Great Falls Elementary, and Spring Hill Elementary) will come together on Saturday, February 8th at Colvin Run Elementary with a goal to prepare 100,000 meal packages for schools and orphanages around the world. Click here to learn more about Rise Against Hunger.  Last year, the Langley pyramid raised enough funding to provide 100,000 meals for families in developing countries around the world, and additional funding to support disaster relief in the United States.  Last year’s meals went to families in Burkina Faso.

We package meals based on the amount of money raised and our Langley pyramid goal is $34,000 which provides 100,000 meals.  With each meal feeding 5-6 people, this is a wonderful event that impacts 500,000 individuals around the world and broadens the perspective of our students and families.  This is a wonderful way for our students to better understand how their role in a school community impacts their global community.

“Learn to Earn” initiative begins Thursday, January 9th

On Wednesday, January 8th, your child will bring home a collection box in which they can start to save money to be donated in January as part of our “Learn to Earn” fundraising efforts.  “Learn to Earn” is the initiative we promote to encourage students to earn money they would like to donate by: taking on additional chores, setting aside part of their allowance, helping shovel snow, or any innovative way they can think.  This initiative also provides them the opportunity to make a choice to keep that extra money or to donate part of it towards a greater good.  Our students are limited by their own imagination.  They will have the opportunity to donate January 9th-24th.

Event Volunteers

Tuesday, January 7th, parents will receive an email which includes a link to Register as a Volunteer for the event.  We know how popular this event has become, and we are so proud to continue hosting it at Colvin Run Elementary School.  The event will have volunteers from all of the Langley pyramid schools and each school is given a specific number of slots per session.  The timeslots are: 8:30-10:30, 11:00-1:00, and 1:30-3:30.

CRES Hour of Code (All Grades)

Hour of Code week is wrapping up, and we continue to be impressed with our students' participation in our Hour of Code event. Colvin Run students have been working on learning and writing computer code through online puzzles, games and activities during Computer Lab or STEAM lab time. Last year our students wrote over 124,000 lines of code in the month of December and we’re hoping to surpass that this year!

Click here to learn more about this global movement to increase interest in Computer Science.  The programming games used during the Hour of Code help nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.

For family fun at home, there are “Code the Holidays” links suitable for all levels from Code link which is on the Resources page of the Colvin Run website.

Character Education Week- January 13-17 (All Grades)

Ms. Allen and Mrs. Gillespie have been working with students throughout the school year. The counselors meet with each class once a month for grades 1-6 and twice a month with Kindergarten.

Recently, Mrs. Gillespie did a lesson on Gratitude with her grade levels and the students wrote thank you notes to people who have had an impact on them. The Kindergarten students made peer thank you notes as well. This activity reminded the students and recipients of the impact we all have on others.

Some of the topics that have been explored this year include: listening skills, friendship, personal responsibility, goal setting, teamwork, leadership, kindness, career exploration, and bullying/harassment.

We look forward to kicking off the new year with Character Ed Week, January 13-17, where we will celebrate school-wide our character traits by highlighting a character trait and wearing a different color each day:

  • Monday Jan 13-Red for Compassion
  • Tuesday Jan 14- Orange for Courage
  • Wednesday Jan 15- Yellow for Honesty
  • Thursday Jan 16- Green for Responsibility
  • Friday Jan 17- Blue for Respect

Bucket Filling Week January 21-24 (All Grades)

The following week, January 21-24, we will have our Bucket Filling Week. During this week, students and staff will be encouraged to become bucket fillers by highlighting positive attributes of each other and classes will have daily reflections.

We are looking forward to a great new year!

Kindergarten Winter Rotations (Kindergarten)

On Monday, Dec. 16th, the Kindergarten students enjoyed their Winter Rotations.  During rotations the students enjoyed collaborating to solve games, balancing objects, creating a keepsake snowflake, and creating their first snow globe.  Thank you to the room parents and volunteers for helping to make our day a success.

Level IV Program Referral Reminder (Grades 2-6)

If you would like to refer your child for the Level IV AAP program, referral forms and optional materials are due to the AART, Alyssa Grabel, by January 9th, 2020 by 4:00 p.m. Due to the tight time frame, if you would like your student screened, do not wait for delivery of CogAT/NNAT test results to submit a referral.  When submitting a referral and any other optional materials, only paper copies will be accepted. No emails attachments will be accepted. No exceptions to the referral deadline are made. If you have any questions, please email Alyssa Grabel at angrabel@fcps.edu.

Hybla Valley Food and Clothing Drive Results 2019

Bags of clothing= 148

Boxes of food= 224

Grocery gift cards= $2,515

Toothbrushes= 1,000+

Generosity of CRES families= PRICELESS

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing CRES community for your overwhelming generosity towards our annual Hybla Valley Food and Clothing drive.  The donations have been pouring in over the last few weeks and our CRES staff and students have been very busy sorting and packing them up for delivery.   As you can see above, this year was an incredible showing of how much our community cares and gives back!! THANK YOU!!!

Also, we would like to recognize two CRES staff members that went above and beyond to organize the students every day and spend their mornings sorting and packing up all of the donations.  Anita Ellis and Sofie Alavi spent every morning, along with our students, going through every bag and placing them in boxes to transport them to Hybla Valley.  Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

None of this would have happened without our passionate and dedicated chairs of this drive, Tina Sarani, Ann Malekzadeh and Alyson Samburg.  They have been working for months, planning with Hybla Valley, to find out what the specific needs of their families are and then communicated that to our community.  They also spent time each week loading up their cars with the boxes to store them in a garage until the day of delivery.  Thank you to the Coleman family for giving up their garages during this collection.  Thank you also to all of the volunteers that showed up on December 9th to load up cars and drive the donations down to Hybla Valley Elementary school in Alexandria. A very special thank you to Marli Kerrigan who made the trip to Hybla Valley twice, once on Dec 2nd for a food delivery and once on the 9th for the main delivery. Thank you!

Also, a big thank you to the office staff who handled all of this with tremendous patience and a smile on their face.

The HVES community is extremely grateful for all that our school has done for them and continues to value our partnership.  Your generous donations help ease family constraints for food during the holiday season and ensures the students have clothing for the winter season.
