Spectacular Winter Concert!

Dear Floris Families -

What a musical celebration we had last night! A standing ovation goes out to our chorus, strings and band students for their wonderful performances. The stands of Rachel Carson were packed with an audience ready to hear pieces on which our children have been working hard this semester. Our young musicians couldn’t be so successful without the encouragement of parents, families and friends. We Thank you for supporting the Arts. And we congratulate our music teachers, Mrs. Fox (Chorus), Mrs. Murphy (Chorus), Ms. McLellan (Chorus), Ms. Rehder (Strings), Ms. Geers (Strings), and Mrs. Cunningham (Band) for cultivating such talent in our students.

Again this year our Giving Tree and Food Drive was a huge success. Thank you to our wonderful Floris community for your donations to the food drive and the Giving Tree program. With your generosity, we were able to provide gifts and food to over 40 children and their families in our local area to make their holiday a little brighter. Thank you!

Today is the last day of school before winter break. We will dismiss at our regular time, 4:00 PM. Floris Elementary School, along with other FCPS schools, will be closed starting Monday, December 23, 2019 through Friday, January 3, 2020. We look forward to seeing your students back on Monday, January 6, 2020.

With winter break starting next week, this is the perfect time for your children to read some good books and play family games together.  Games are another great way to develop critical and creative thinking skills in students.  As you play with your children, notice how they think flexibly to make moves that will help them win.  Watch to see if they persist through challenges.  Ask probing questions like ‘Why did you think to make that move?’, ‘What might happen if…’, and ‘What strategies did you use to win (or try to win)?’  As you play over the next few months, watch as your children’s critical and creative thinking skills grow and develop. You might also help them learn to use those skills in other endeavors like homework, activities outside of school, etc.

Ms. Dorr and I wish you all a wonderful break. We hope that you find the time to make wonderful memories with family and friends. If you are traveling, safe travels. We’ll see everyone back on Monday, January 6, 2020.

Sincerely,

Gail Porter, Principal and Amanda Dorr, Assistant Principal

POSITIVITY CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE WEEK (January 6 – January 10, 2020): HOPE/ OPTIMISM

What Does HOPE/OPTISIM Mean?  You expect the best from the future and work to achieve it. Hope and optimism represent a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive
attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals. Why does it matter? For individuals, optimism is correlated with success in work and play, mental and physical health, and strong social relationships. Optimistic people are planners and goal setters. On a group level, optimism is crucial to group success.
Optimists are strong leaders. They find meaning in hardship and can create a vision for the future. Without hope and optimism, we would not be able to
overcome hardships.

Quote of the Week:  "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." - Martin Luther King, Jr.
