Dear Graham Road Families!

It's been an exciting last few days of 2019 at Graham Road! Last week, our superintendent, Dr. Scott Brabrand visited and was able to see what makes our school community so special. He connected with parents and saw students thinking critically and creatively in the classroom. We appreciated the time he took to visit us. His energy, enthusiasm and vision for our district are inspiring! We're lucky to have a leader like him.

This week, EVERY student at Graham Road received a brand new book for winter break reading! This generous gift was made possible thanks to Luther Jackson Middle School principal, Mike Magliola, LJMS staff and LJMS community business partners. Teachers at Graham Road have been collaborating with Luther Jackson MS staff for weeks to select high interest books for students. Luther Jackson MS students wrapped each book and labeled with Graham Road students' names. Teachers hand delivered each book on Tuesday. You can see the excitement on students' faces in the pictures below! Partnering with the middle school our students will eventually attend was so much fun! We are grateful for their generosity!

Over winter break, our school office will be closed December 23 - January 3. All staff will be enjoying time with family and loved ones! I am so excited to travel to my hometown in Kentucky with my daughter and husband to see my parents, brother, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and grandmother!

We wish you all good health, relaxation and happiness as you begin and enjoy your winter break. We have enjoyed an incredible school year thus far. Students and teachers are learning together every day. We appreciate the knowledge you've shared with us and the support you provide at home.

We look forward to seeing you all in 2020 and continuing our exciting journey of learning at Graham Road!

Warmly,

Lauren Badini

Red Bag Volunteers Needed!

ATTN: Luther Jackson Nation! We need 50 more families in our community to volunteer to be "Red Bag" donors so we can make sure all of our children are fed.

The "Red Bag" program allows us to provide food for our students who need it over weekends and holidays when they aren't in school. Please share this information with your friends in the Falls Church HS pyramid. Here's the Food for Neighbors website where you can easily sign-up: https://www.foodforneighbors.org/red-bag-program/ And, if you're on Facebook, please share this there as well.

The full story: There are several dozen students in our pyramid that rely on the school's pantry for the weekend and holiday meals. In fact, this organization started because a PTA President in Herndon several years ago realized that most food programs focus on elementary school kids and that their school didn't have a program. Food for Neighbor's reach has grown across Fairfax County and LJMS' PTA recently agreed to "adopt" middle and high schools around Falls Church and Tysons. All of that to say, we need to come up with a lot of "red bag" donors.

If you sign-up, you are committing to fill a red grocery bag every two months and leave it out for pickup on scheduled Saturday mornings (1/11/2020, 3/7, 5/2, 9/12, etc.). Bags are picked up, taken to the local hub school, contents sorted, representatives from each school select the items they need and take their bins back to their school.

Here's a link for more information, and how to sign-up. We hope you'll consider becoming a "Red Bag" donor. Thanks!
