Exciting News from Ms. Richardson, our HES Librarian!

This year, Fairfax Barnes and Noble has selected Herndon Elementary School as one of its three Title I schools to partner with for their yearly book drive.  We have been receiving shipments of books for the last several weeks, and next week we will have enough books for EVERY STUDENT in the school to receive a book!

We will be setting up the books in the library for students to pick.  We know this time of year is quite busy, so if you would like to have your students pick their books during their checkout time, we are happy to do that.  If you would like to bring your students down during a time that is separate from checkout to pick their book that they will be able to take home and keep, please take a look at my calendar and send me an email with the day/time you would like to come.  Our hope is to have students begin picking out their books THIS Friday.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Congratulations to Herndon ES Outstanding Nominees!!!

Stephanie Almquist, AP – Outstanding Leader

Carmen Arrieta, Office Assistant – Outstanding Operational Employee

Sarah Richardson, Librarian – Outstanding Teacher

Sarah Libeg, ESOL Teacher – Outstanding Teacher

Mona Samaha, Resource Teacher – Outstanding Teacher

Please Drive Mindfully around Herndon Elementary

At this time of year people tend to be distracted with all the activities going on for the various holidays.  Please remember to drive with caution in the school parking lot and in the general vicinity of the school.  Many children walk to school and ride their bikes so being extra alert is a good thing all year round.  Please follow the directions of the school crossing guard and look in all directions when turning or trying to park.  Thank you.

DONATIONS of used Clean Clothing Needed at Herndon Elementary

If you can donate used clean clothing such as shirts and elastic pants or leggings we would greatly appreciate it!  This is used for younger children that have had accidents including slipping in the mud and food spills when we can’t reach parents to bring in clean-dry clothing.  Thank you so much

pta luncheon

The staff at Herndon would like to give a big "THANK YOU" to PTA parent Lisa Taggart, the PTA Board, and all of those volunteers who treated us to a festive and delicious Holiday Luncheon.

PTA News...

Holiday Luncheon and Cookie Buffet

Thank you to all the brilliant bakers who contributed cookies and helped set up our holiday treats for our teachers and staff.  The luncheon was a big hit yesterday, and the feedback was enthusiastic.  We appreciate your help in showing our hardworking teachers and staff how much they mean to us!

Next Spirit Night

Our Spirit Night at Panera has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 16.  Warm up this winter with some soup and sandwiches that support your school! Look for the flyer in your Thursday folders in January.

General PTA Meeting

Spend some time with our Principal Teresa Fennessy during our next PTA Meeting as she discusses the importance of internet safety and issues affecting our children in the digital world.  Coffee with the Principal is a unique opportunity to get to know your PTA and school.  So mark your calendars for Friday, January 17 at 9:20 am and meet us in the Library.

Winter Clubs

There's a wide variety of Winter Clubs starting in January, so check our website at https://herndonespta.com/clubs/ for the latest updates on dates, registration forms, and other info.  Currently, the clubs being offered include: Chess Bee Academy, Board Game Club, Percussion Works, Kid Yoga, Basketball, and Young Rembrandts.

4th Grade Young Scholars are collecting water bottles

The Young Scholars 4th graders will be building a greenhouse with recycled plastic bottles in the new year. We need your help to collect as many bottles as we can get! Bring any size or color plastic bottles to school and put them in the box outside the cafeteria. Put your recycling to good use and help us build a new green house for the HES Garden Grow garden. Thank you!

Full Time Level IV referral deadline, January 9, 2020

This is a friendly reminder that the Advanced Academic Programs full-time Level IV Referral Form and optional materials (referral form, parent questionnaire, five pieces of information such as awards or letters, 4 pages of single-sided, 2 dimensional, 8 ½ x 11 work samples) for students in Grades 2-6 who are not in the pool are due no later than Thursday, January 9, 2020, 4pm at the main office. Parents are welcome to submit early, but no late referrals will be accepted. Due to the tight time frame, we advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision. If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, there are two parent presentations available on the AAP public website.  If you have questions, please direct them to Jackie Kwon at jkwon@fcps.edu.
