Helpful Tips for Tax Season
Once the holiday season ends, tax season begins. Start preparing now with these simple tips from the Office of Payroll Management:
-
Update your address in Uconnect by December 20.
- Keep your last pay advice from 2019 within reach.
- Once your W-2 arrives (on or around January 31), put it in a safe place with your other tax-related documents.
In the coming weeks, there'll be more information about the new Form W-4 on the Office of Payroll Management intranet page and in Employee News.

System Maintenance to Impact Network Systems During Winter Break
The Department of Information Technology (IT) will be performing several system maintenance and update activities during winter break which will impact the availability of network systems and resources.
During the periods below, systems (FCPS 24/7 Blackboard, MyTime, EDSL, etc.) will experience periods of inaccessibility throughout the weekend:
- Friday, December 20, 5 p.m. through Sunday, December 22.
- Friday, December 27, 5 p.m. through Sunday, December 29.
FCPS email and G Suite for Education will remain accessible during these times.
All employees are encouraged to plan ahead and complete any online work before 5 p.m. December 20, and before 5 p.m. December 27, to avoid disruption of access. Normal access to network systems and resources will resume on Monday mornings.
IT will also deploy security and application updates to FCPS-owned computers throughout winter break. When you return, IT strongly recommends turning on FCPS-owned computers (staff and students) and allowing them to complete updates for five minutes before attempting to use them. This will help prevent slowness. Please contact the IT Service Desk with questions at ITServiceDesk@fcps.edu or 703-503-1600.
#OurFCPS Faces: Alfred Bunaugh
Meet Alfred (Al) Bunaugh, treasure hunter extraordinaire! Actually, Al's official job title is safety and security specialist at the Transition Support Resource Center (TSRC). The TSRC is a short-term intervention program, which is part of FCPS' Interagency Alternative Schools program. Al helps ensure a safe and secure school environment by preparing crisis plans, performing security walk-throughs, implementing procedures for student and staff safety, and addressing safety concerns.
Al began his career at FCPS as the head girls junior varsity basketball coach at Stuart HS (now Justice HS) and Herndon HS. Afterward, he became a safety and security assistant at Herndon MS and Cedar Lane School. He has worked for FCPS for 14 years.
David Penland is Al's supervisor at the TSRC. David says, “Mr. Bunaugh is the backbone of our operation at TSRC Fairfax. He is the first and last face our students see every day, and the advocate who makes sure all students get to school on time. His attention to detail and consistency make him a true treasure hunter who sees to it that all students are capable of success–no exceptions.”
Al says the best thing about his job is, “I get to work with a student population that is typically more difficult to work with and assist them in developing their own talents.” He adds, “I hope to provide an opportunity for every student I meet to find their own success and pay it forward to someone else in their lifetime.”
Al is dedicated to life-long learning. Less than two weeks ago, he completed FCPS' Supporting the Mission Leadership Cohort. Along with his Problem of Practice group, Al presented a solution for integrating career exploration and planning at the elementary level as well as creating and storing career information in an electronic portfolio.
In Al's free time, he likes to read, play video games, and try new things.
We truly appreciate Al's commitment to helping our students see the best in themselves.
Did you know that more than 2,400 homeless children are enrolled in FCPS? Roughly 24 percent of them are without a parent or guardian. Last year, more than $9,200 was collected in cash and gift cards, and given to students in need. We hope you’ll help again this year by purchasing gift cards (in any amount). Walmart, Target, and grocery store gift cards are suggested. Please mark the value on the back of the cards. Send them to Patti Parisi, Financial Services, Gatehouse, Room 4214; Tina West, Special Services, Willow Oaks, Room 2109; or Amy Verdin, Foundation for FCPS, Gatehouse, Suite 5101. If you don’t have time to shop, you may send cash or checks to The Foundation for FCPS or donate online. Thank you!
