KG December Update #2

A Note from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are counting the days until winter break, but learning continues to be a focus.  We are excited by the Hour of Code and the opportunity for students to participate.  Please do read the blurb below in order to understand how Kent Gardens will work with our students during the Hour of Code challenge week.

Many thanks to all who attended International Night!  We so enjoyed the food, the fellowship, arts and crafts, and talent show at the end. We couldn’t have done it without the support of Nadya Abyhankar, Mirtha Arce Maldonado, Inoh Chung, and Cielo Leech. We have many pictures to share and have posted on our social media for you to enjoy.

Our French interns are due to arrive on January 18, 2020.  This year we will have 7 interns.  At this point, we are lacking three hosts.  We truly need support from our families.  We will have to cancel the interns if we do not find hosts.  Please email Marie Hinton, mjhinton@fcps.edu or Holly McGuigan, hsmcguigan@fcps.edu with your interest. It is a life-changing experience for our students, our teachers, the interns, and our families!  The deadline for application is December 12.  Here is the link to apply to host a French intern: https://forms.gle/PNfXUoNBByGpRQeW9   Don't miss out on a little bit of French in your house this winter!”

We look forward to the winter break and will be sharing information regarding some learning opportunities at home. We do want all of our families and students to have a relaxing break and enjoy the winter break.  We also support movement and outside activities. Kent Gardens will also provide a link for you to share your children and family ‘getting active’!

This Friday morning, I will host a principal’s coffee at 8 a.m..  Please join me to discuss any questions or concerns that you may have!  In January, we will host a session on Zones of Regulation.  This curriculum supports students social/emotional regulation. This date will be forthcoming!

Thanks as always for your support as we wind up 2019 and enter 2020!

Warmly,

Holly McGuigan, Principal

We Need Three Families to Host French Interns!

If we don’t hear from you, we will have to cancel some of the interns…

On January 18th,  seven interns will come from ESPE Clermont-Auvergne, France. The program’s wonderful success depends upon the generosity of the Kent Gardens families who host the French interns.  Please consider letting some French culture into your home this winter and offer to host an intern.

Hour of Code Week!

Kent Gardens is proud to participate in the 2019 Hour of Code! We will introduce our Grades 1 through 6 students to coding. Why? https://youtu.be/nKIu9yen5nc  How? https://hourofcode.com/files/hoc-one-pager.pdf”. Students will practice at school in various classes and they will be able to share what they are doing during their Hour of Code at home.  Anyone can do it! Students can access these activities at home as well.  The link to get started is on the Kent Gardens Website.  See https://hourofcode.com/us/learn for details and activities.

Other Updates:

Positivity Project: Humility means you do not seek the spotlight. Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations, and are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments. Humility and modesty are often characterized as synonymous with shy or meek. This is false. True humility is a sign of strength; it is a quiet confidence in who you are. It requires an honest self-reflection on your strengths and weaknesses, and self-control over ego, arrogance, and vanity. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.

Geography Bee:  Students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades will participate in the preliminary rounds of the Geography Bee the next two weeks.  We will hold the final round at the end of January.  Parents will be notified so that they may attend.  https://www.nationalgeographic.org/bee/study/

Full-Time Level IV Services Referral Timeline: Parents or guardians may refer students in Grade 2-7 to Kent Gardens Level IV services by submitting the Advanced Academic Programs Level IV Referral Form to the school by 4 p.m. on January 9, 2020. Parents should not wait for test results before turning in the Level IV Referral form as no exceptions are made to the January referral deadline. Additional information is available at the Advanced Academics section of the KGES home page and on the FCPS website. https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students Please direct your questions to Stephanie Will at sdwill@fcps.edu
