Winter Break

It is that time of the year where cold weather arrives.  I want to thank you in advance for ensuring students are dressed appropriately and bundled in heavier coats and boots, when necessary.  In addition, please stay tuned to inclement weather updates on the local news channels, Channel 21, or on the FCPS website.  If you haven’t already done so, it is a good idea to update your child’s emergency care card and have an alternate plan in place if the weather causes school to open later or dismiss early.  I hope you enjoy the holidays with family and friends.  I look forward to seeing the Dragons in 2020!  As a reminder, students will be out of school from Monday, December 23, 2019 through Friday, January 3, 2020. Students return on Monday, January 6, 2020.  School office will be closed December 23, 2019 through January 3, 2020.

2019 Scholastic Bookfair

Does your child love to read?  Looking for gift ideas? We invite you to visit our annual Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading!  The 2019 Book Fair is being held December 13th, 16th- 19th with the evening portion on Wednesday, December 18th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm.   Come to browse or buy, and keep in mind all profits directly benefit Fairfax Villa Elementary School!

Winter Sing Along: December 20th

Our Annual Winter Sing Along is on Friday, December 20th in the Fairfax Villa gym! Grades 1, 3, and 5 will be singing at 1:15 pm, and grades K, 2, 4, and 6 will be singing at 2:45 pm. All community members attending this event will need to sign in using the Visitor Management System (VMS). If you have previously scanned your driver’s license using the VMS, you will check in at a designated table in the lobby and receive a visitor tag. If you have not previously scanned your driver’s license using the VMS, please allow time to do so prior to the event. We hope you will join us for an afternoon of seasonal music and fun!

Deadline for AAP Level IV Referrals

This is a friendly reminder that the deadline for referring students in Grades 2-7 for AAP full-time Level IV consideration is due no later than January 9, 2020.  No late referrals will be accepted.  We advise parents not to wait for pending abilities test scores if they would like their student screened. While the Grade 2 screening pool casts a starting point for screening some students, test scores are only one factor in the eligibility decision.

If you would like more information about Level IV AAP services or the screening process for Level IV, parent presentations are available in both English and Spanish on the AAP public website (see “Parent Presentations”). These presentations have the same information that was shared at our local school information meetings. The website also includes the timeline for the 2019-2020 school year and all forms that you will need.

Referrals and all accompanying materials should be submitted to the school office (attention: Mrs. Wilkins, AART) no later than January 9, 2020 before 4:15 pm. All referrals and optional materials must be submitted in hard copy/paper form. No electronic submissions will be accepted. Please contact Mrs. Wilkins with any questions at cmwilkins@fcps.edu.

POSITIVITY CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE WEEK    HUMILITY

What does HUMILITY mean? Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated)

sense of their abilities and achievements. True humility is a sign of strength; it is a quiet confidence in who you are. It requires an honest self-reflection on your strengths and weaknesses, and self-control over ego, arrogance, and vanity.

WHY DOES IT MATTER? Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” -ERNEST HEMINGWAY
