Inclusion Week, 2019

Every child deserves to feel welcome, safe, and included at Flint Hill. While this statement underscores our efforts regarding Social and Emotional Learning, this year, our PTA, in support of our increasing focus on inclusion, kindness, and empathy, adopted an interactive program known as "Walk In My Shoes." For the first time, all students participated in a series of activities that enabled them to see the world from the perspective of students with disabilities or sensory issues.

Not only does this program promote inclusion, but it empowers teachers and students to strengthen their classroom communities through discussion of what it means to include someone in an activity, how to use strengths to overcome challenges, and the ways in which students can respect and support all classmates.

Please note that this event is just one way we will continue to be intentional and maintain our aim of an enduring legacy for Flint Hill that promotes a caring and compassionate school climate where all students are valued and respected for who they are.

We look forward to next year's event and to making this an annual tradition at Flint Hill. In the meantime, we hope you have had an opportunity to discuss this learning experience with your child. A special thanks to our PTA, each of our volunteers, and most especially to Liz Crimmins, Neera Datta, and Karyn Patino, who spearheaded this amazing effort!

Tech Talk

This is a gentle reminder for parents that your child can access Lexia Core 5, PowerUp, and Typing Club from home. These are programs that are funded, in part, by you, our PTA. We can't thank you enough for your financial support, as well as for the support you demonstrate to your child by helping him or her find a balance between screen time and play/recharge time.

Gift Card Collection for Families in Need

We are collecting gift cards to donate to families in need over the holiday season. If you are able to donate, we are looking for Giant, Target, and Walmart gift cards in any amount. Thank you for your help in brightening the holidays for those in need! All gift cards can be sent to the attention of our full-time counselor, Mrs. Williams.

Book Fair

Thank you to those who attended our family event on Friday, December 6th. Students can also purchase items on Monday and Tuesday, December 9th and 10th, during school hours. All proceeds from the book fair directly support the library, and as we are considering ways to redesign our library for learning and collaboration, this year's funds will directly support our mural, furniture, and new books! Thank you for helping us update our shared space!

Teaching Kids Kindness Through the Holidays and Beyond

Posted 11/09/2018 by Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Resources

Every December when the twinkle lights go up and shoppers fill the malls, children across America start dreaming of all the holiday presents, delicious meals, and festive cheer they’ll soon enjoy. Unfortunately, not every child and family anticipates the winter holidays with hope, due to a range of circumstances and hardships. Amidst all the holiday hubbub, it’s important to take time out to show compassion for others and guide the kids in our lives to see beyond their own experiences and desires.

Help promote understanding and shape the next generation of compassionate people by teaching the kids in your life how to empathize with others. If you’re a parent, guardian, mentor, or even just a friend, you can take an active role in teaching empathy and showing more compassion towards others by setting an example for the kids in your life.

Tweet of the Week

We continue to highlight learning experiences that support the acquisition of Portrait of a Graduate attributes and skills across our classrooms.

This is a special tweet indeed! While Mrs. Kainth shares how her students document their thinking during a routine that requires no talking, Mr. Bechtle chimes in about how his second graders can collaborate with 4th grade to learn from one another about a critical time in Virginia's history!

For more information on Portrait of a Graduate, ask your child how they are a communicator, collaborator, critical and creative thinker, goal-directed and resilient individual, or ethical and global citizen. Or, click here!
