Glasgow Community:

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” I love this time of year because of the many ways we celebrate as a staff, school and community.

On Friday, we had our annual Staff Ugly Winter Sweater Contest. As always, it was a huge hit.  I think the game gets upped every year! We will be using the some of the gift cards that were recently donated to award prizes in the following categories: Most Ugliest, Most Spirited and Most Creative.

I brought my I brought my daughters, Claire and Regan, to see “Dorothy in Wonderland.” on Saturday night. We loved it! It was incredible to see our students’ confidence on the stage. They had us laughing and on the edge of our seats the entire show. Congratulations and a huge thank you to Ms. Smits-Beasley for her incredible support of our theater students! I encourage you to come to the Chorus and Band concerts this upcoming week - it is wonderful to see our students shining outside the classroom.

I have also loved seeing the comments students have been writing on our Panther Cards for Staff throughout the past week. Some words and phrases I’m noticing over and over again reflect our values as a school: “helpful, kind, believe in me, committed, friendly, smile, never give up.” The little ways we communicate care and belonging matter, and our students notice.

I look forward to seeing you at our PTA meeting on Tuesday night. As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Shawn DeRose
Principal

Glasgow Goodies

Glasgow History 6 Teachers at Mt. Vernon: History 6 teachers celebrated the season with a special night at Mt. Vernon free of charge. The program took participants back in time to the music of the Constitutional Convention and the late 18th century while making connections to the music of today. Following the program there was a Candlelight tour of the Mansion.

November Panthers of the Month: The IB Learner Profile that we focused on this month for our Panther of the Month was “Reflective.” Students who are reflective give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. Our Panthers of the Month, Marko Soliz Galicia, Karla Ponce Munguia, Nico Gruse, Madelin Jurado-Gomez, Adam Fikar, and Antonella O’Higgins-Malina were chosen for their ability to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development! Congratulations to all of our winners and nominees!

2019 Scholastic Glasgow Book Fair: Many thanks to Tara Sanz and Theresa Connell, as well as our teachers and parent volunteers, for hosting the 2019 Scholastic Book Fair! This was a great opportunity for students, families, and teachers to browse the bookshelves for new and interesting titles this holiday season.

Volunteer at Glasgow!

Gift Card Donations Wanted: When I first started at Glasgow in the spring of 2015, I requested parent support by donating $5 gift cards that we could use as incentives and thank you's for our staff. Your response was overwhelming and I have finally used the generous stash that you all provided.

I am requesting your help again since we are not permitted to use any kind of FCPS funds, local or otherwise, for this purpose. It is amazing how much a $5 gift card is appreciated. If you are so inclined, please feel free to drop them off at the main office or drop them in the mail to my attention. I will share the love with staff throughout the school year. Thank you so much! (It can be for any business you want to support, in any amount. Nothing is too small!)

Grab-n-Go Pre-Winter Break Breakfast - December 18: The PTA will provide a Pre-Winter Break breakfast for Glasgow teachers and staff on Wednesday, December 18. Since it’s a school day, we’ll set up the popular grab-n-go format so teachers/staff can pack a bag of goodies to eat whenever they get a chance during the day! We’ll need lots of volunteers and food and beverage donations to make this breakfast possible. Volunteer here

If you are short on time to volunteer or bring a donated item, the PTA would be happy to receive your monetary donation to purchase supplies for this event.

After School Program News

The after-school program is going great! Students are enjoying the different clubs and activities that are being offered. As we get closer to the Winter Break, the after-school program would like to provide you with the upcoming schedule of programming.

On Wednesday, December 11 and Thursday, December 12 after-school activities will be limited due to the band and chorus winter concerts.  The ASAP program will continue as planned. If you have any questions about Glasgow’s After School Program, check out our website, email Greg Williams, After School Coordinator at gwilliams2@fcps.edu or call 703-813-8885.
