Students learn what it's like to walk in someone else's shoes!
Dear Floris Families –
What a wonderful week we’ve had here at Floris. In honor of National Inclusion Week, we held our annual Walk in My Shoes program. We would like to extend a big THANK YOU to Margaret Behrns and Lise Greenfield for organizing and delivering our program again this year. Students in 3rd through 6th grade learned to appreciate what it’s like to have a movement disorder, ADHD, Dyslexia, food allergies and/or issues with fine motor skills, visual motor integration, understanding emotion, communications, color vision, and visual impairment. We also want to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers. Without your guidance and assistance, this program would not be so successful.
Yesterday, our 5th and 6th grade Choruses put on a wonderful winter daytime concert for their school-mates. Thank you to Ms. Fox, Ms. McLellan and Ms. Murphy for coordinating and directing our choruses and presenting such a wonderful program. The remaining winter concerts are on Thursday, December 19th:
- Day-time concert - Band and Strings at Floris ES 2:30 PM and again at 3:15 PM.
- Evening concert – 5th and 6th grade Choruses, Band and Strings at Rachel Carson Middle School - 7:00 PM. Students should arrive by 6:30 PM for warm-ups.
For the day-time concerts, if you plan to attend please park on Mustang Drive or other surrounding neighborhood streets to alleviate parking issues within the Floris ES parking lot. Thank you for your continued support in keeping our school safe.
REMINDER: Floris Giving Tree - All donations are due by Monday, December 9th. Please remember to wrap them and attach the tree.
With winter break only two weeks away, we hope you find time to relax and enjoy the weekend.
Sincerely,
Gail Porter, Principal and Amanda Dorr, Assistant Principal
POSITIVITY CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE WEEK (December 9 – December 13): HUMILITY
What Does HUMILITY Mean? You do not seek the spotlight. You let your actions speak for themselves. Humble people have an accurate (not underestimated) sense of their abilities and achievements. They hold the capacity to acknowledge their mistakes and limitations. They are open to advice and new ideas. They do not show off their possessions or accomplishments.
Why does it Matter? Developing humility is associated with positive developmental outcomes in individuals. It allows a person to honestly reflect on their abilities and acknowledge how and where they can improve. Humility opens them up to new ideas, advice, and (consequently) abilities that pride, arrogance, or pretentiousness often block. Therefore, humility makes them desired members of a team.
Quote of the Week: “A true genius admits he knows nothing.” -Albert Einstein
