Louise Archer Sunshine News #6

Our chorus students have had some wonderful opportunities to share their talents in our community this holiday season! They will perform again at the National Tree in DC on December 11th at 7pm.

From the Principal's Desk:

It’s time to close out one calendar year and begin another.  Where did the year go?  Now is a great opportunity to reflect on the past year, while looking towards the New Year with hope and anticipation.  When reflecting on this past calendar year at Louise Archer, we realize the many talents and gifts our students have brought with them each day to our school.  We have cherished seeing many smiling faces and students engaged in learning every single day.

We also have benefitted greatly from your generous gift of time, support, and expertise as you set a positive example for your children.  Please continue to share these talents and gifts with others so they too, can feel the warmth of the Louise Archer community.  On behalf of all of the staff at Louise Archer, we want to thank you for the many acts of kindness that have enriched the lives not only of our school, but the entire Vienna community.  We hope that you and your family enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season!  We look forward to seeing you in 2020!

Announcements

Geography Bee

We are excited to share that fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students will have the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Geography Bee this January. Review materials for this can be found on the Louise Archer website under Student Links in the Social Studies section, or click here. Students are encouraged to start preparing now. Participating students will take part in the qualifying round between January 13 and January 24. The top qualifying student from each class will move on to participate in the school geography bee on Thursday, January 30. Our school winner will then take a qualifying test to determine eligibility for the state level bee.

What's Happening in STEAM?

In STEAM we are infusing Portrait of a Graduate skills in our activities, especially focusing on Communicator, Collaborator, and Critical and Creative Thinker. The Arts are integrated throughout problem solving activities along with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math parts of STEAM.   Students continue to use the Engineering Design process for challenges and often leave with comments like “Next time….” or “What if….”.

Students throughout our school continue to work on Number Sense and practicing math skills.   Directions for many of the games or activities that you might also enjoy at home are on the STEAM, Technology and Library Blackboard site under the STEAM tab and Math Games at Home. As with many games, there are often a wide variety of ways of playing, so the students are told as long as all players agree to (and know) the same rules, it’s all good. We hope you will enjoy some of these games at home. There is also a Math Resources tab with some of the charts and resources that we use at school. There is also a STEAM Pictures folder that students and parents may enjoy viewing together to share what different classes and students have done.
