FSES second graders had a blast on their field trip to the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum last month. The field trip served as an introduction to their Social Studies unit on Developments and Innovations. The students witnessed how technology and innovations grow and change over time. The second graders loved exploring the thousands of aviation and space artifacts including a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, a Concorde, and the Space Shuttle Discovery.
FSES is excited to continue the Positivity Project this school year! Each week a new character trait is explicitly taught to our students. While the level of depth varies by grade, the entire school learns about the same trait at the same time. This week, students will be focusing on humility. Students will learn about what it means to be humble and ways in which they can build and recognize that trait in others. By recognizing and appreciating one another’s strengths, students will also be adopting the “other people matter” mindset.
McLean High School is hosting a HOLIDAY MOVIE & CRAFT NIGHT on Friday, December 13, from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas while making holiday crafts in the Lecture Hall before heading to the main gym to watch the Lady Highlanders take on Westfield. This event is open to all McLean H.S. students, as well as middle and elementary* school students.
*All elementary school students who wear their youth basketball jerseys will get into the girls varsity basketball game FREE with a paying adult.
Please note FSES holds outdoor recess even during cold spells. Please make sure your children are prepared to play outdoors by dressing them appropriately for the winter weather (long pants, coats, gloves, and hats).
Cold and wintry weather will soon be here! Due to inclement weather or other emergency situations, it may be necessary to close schools for the entire day, to open schools late, or to close schools early.
Parents are urged to make arrangements now for the care of their children when schedule changes are made (and to provide for the rare situation when it is necessary to close an individual school because of a power failure or other circumstances). Children should know where to go if a parent will not be home.
FCPS has several schedules to deal with inclement weather. These are put into effect when conditions threaten the safety of students and staff members:
- Keep schools closed.
- Open school two hours late.
- Close schools two hours early.
When Fairfax County Public Schools has a schedule change (closing or delay) due to inclement weather or other emergencies, the information is communicated in several ways as soon as the decision is made.
Note: The official @FCPSnews Twitter account (with blue checkmark) is generally the first and fastest mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be updated as quickly as possible including email, text, website, other social media, and news stations.
Please be aware, due to the large volume of emails sent, there will likely be a lag between the time an FCPS Twitter alert is posted and the receipt of an email in your inbox.
