Positivity Project: Kindness

You are generous to others and you are never too busy to help out. You enjoy doing good deeds for other people.

Kindness has been a foundation of moral and spiritual life across cultures and religions throughout history. This character strength is grounded in the belief of a common humanity in which others are worthy of care, attention, affection, and compassion. Aristotle defined kindness as, ”helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped.”

Kind people think about the needs and feelings of other people, and then act to help those people. Kind people are selfless. That is why a true act of kindness is distinct from helping another person in order to simply gain something for yourself. An individual with the strength of kindness helps others because it’s the right thing to do, not because they expect any reciprocal treatment or gain in reputation.

Picture Retake Day

Picture Retakes are scheduled for Thursday, December 5. A flyer with an order form is going home today. It is for new students and students absent on Picture Day. If students want a retake, they must bring the picture taken.

Dress for the Weather

The weather this time of year can be unpredictable, with temperatures sometimes changing quickly throughout the day. Dressing in layers is often helpful. Please make sure your students are coming to school with coats, hats and gloves, if appropriate, as they still go outside for recess whenever possible.

Advanced Academic Programs Screening Procedures

The screening of elementary and middle school students for eligibility in Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) may be ongoing throughout the year for Levels II-III and has specific deadlines for Level IV. Notice 2401, Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Testing, Screening, and Identification for Elementary and Middle School Students 2019-20, provides a detailed timeline for the AAP screening processes.

Additional details can be found on the FCPS website, including overview of services K-12, referral forms and surveys, and screening procedures.

This year’s Level IV parent referral deadline is January 9, 2020.

Make Plans for Inclement Weather

When Fairfax County Public Schools have a schedule change (closing or delay) due to inclement weather or other emergencies, the information is communicated as soon as the decision is made in these ways:

  1. Posted on fcps.edu.
  2. Posted to the FCPS Twitter and Facebook
  3. Email and text messages sent to parents and employees.
  4. Email sent to News You Choose subscribers of Delayed Openings and School Closings.
  5. Posted on FCPS cable Channel 21 (Cox Communications, Reston Comcast, and Verizon cable customers only).
  6. Area radio and television stations.
  7. REMEMBER, Weyanoke is a Fairfax County Public School.

Parents are urged to make arrangements now for the care of their children when schedule changes are made (and to provide for the rare situation when it is necessary to close an individual school because of a power failure or other circumstances). Children should know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be at home.
