Westgate Weekly News

Good Afternoon Westgate Families!

I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Thanksgiving break with family and friends.  I definitely enjoyed having a few extra moments making memories with loved ones, as I am sure you felt the same.  Our staff is so happy to be back with our students as we finish out these last few weeks of the year!  There are many exciting events happening this month so please make sure you stay connected with both classroom and school correspondence.

This Thursday, December 5th, the Westgate PTA will be showing the acclaimed film Screenagers, Next Chapter.  Please see below regarding ticket sales and details surrounding the evening.  Also, on Friday, December 6th, we will host our PTA Bingo Night.  Come see friends, win prizes, and have fun with the entire family!   More information can be found below.

As a reminder, please make student and staff safety your number one priority during arrival and dismissal.  We understand that it is a busy time of day, but make sure you are following safe practices as you enter Kiss & Ride, park in the neighborhood, and walk students across Magarity Road.  Cars are not allowed in the bus loop during these times, and students should always cross Magarity at the dedicated crosswalk with the crossing guard.  We appreciate your efforts as we work as a school community to ensure that all students arrive and leave safely.

As always, thank you for your continued support of all things Westgate and have a fabulous rest of the week and weekend ahead!

All my best,

Hallie Demetriades
Principal

Bingo Night - Friday, Dec. 6th

bingo

This family-friendly, PTA sponsored event is  returning on Friday, Dec. 6th in the Westgate cafeteria!  If you're a Bingo veteran or have never played before, Bingo is a lot of fun for all ages -- kids and adults alike!

$5 buys 60 game cards, which allows a family of four to play all night (two adults playing two cards per game and two kids playing one card per game). You can also purchase individual regular bingo cards for 25 cents each. Cards may only be used one time and you can play as many as you'd like per game--some Bingo heroes can play four and even six cards per game! The more cards you buy, the better your chance of winning!

We will play 10 games and the winner of each game gets to select a prize from the prize table.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first game starts at 6:30 sharp!

The PTA will be selling pizza for $2 a slice, plus candy, snacks, and water for $1 each.

You can pre-order an entire pizza for your family: $12 for an entire cheese or $14 for a one-topping pizza (please specify which topping!).

Pizza often sells out at Bingo Night and we do not order more, but pre-ordering is an easy way to ensure your family gets one. We hold pre-ordered items only until 7 p.m., though, before offering them for sale to others by the slice.

To pre-order pizza, please email Nicole with the subject line "pizza order" at president@westgatewolvespta.com by  Wednesday, Dec 4th at 9pm.

If anyone is available and willing to help on Bingo night please sign up:

Book Fair - Thank You!

Thanks to everyone who supported the Fall Book Fair through purchases and donations to teacher wish lists. It was especially wonderful to have Westgate volunteers pitch in during the busy week. The fair couldn’t happen without your hard work and dedication.

I hope that everyone enjoys their purchases and exciting books! Your support of the book fair helped to raise over $2800 for new books and programs such as Battle of the Books, our summer book exchange, Virginia Readers’ Choice, and author visits.

Sincerely, Mrs. Scherbenske

FIRST Lego League Jr. @ Westgate

The Westgate community is looking to start one or more FLL Junior Teams for the 2019-2020 season.  The target community is current 2nd and 3rd grade students.  To make this happen, we need parents or staff willing to coach and mentor teams (two coaches per team; up to six students per team; unlimited mentors per team).  The time commitment is 2-3 hours each week for 12 weeks beginning January 2020, leading to team attendance at an FLL Jr. Expo in April 2020.  FIRST provides a structured curriculum making it relatively easy to succeed as a rookie coach.  Plus the Westgate FLL coaches and team members are excited to mentor and inspire.

Guided by adult coaches and FIRST® Core Values, students build models using LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0 and create Show Me posters to present what they learned. The program focuses on building interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through a real-world challenge – to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination. The current season theme is “Boomtown Build” where teams will explore the growing needs and challenges of the people in our community. Teams will help to imagine and create a building that solves a problem and makes life easier, happier, or more connected for the people that use it.

If you are interested in coaching, mentoring, or have a 2nd or 3rd grade student interested in participating in FLL Jr., please contact Bala Morla, balarama.morla@gmail.com.  More details are found at https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/flljr.

Separately, if you have a 4th, 5th, or 6th grader interested in FLL, the current season is over; however, the coaches are starting to recruit (students and coaches) for the 2020 season.  If interested, please contact Trent Benisch, benisch.t@gmail.com for more details.  Also check out https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/fll

Finally, if you work for Booz Allen Hamilton or another FIRST corporate sponsor who provides financial support to FIRST teams each season, please contact Trent Benisch, benisch.t@gmail.com to explore how Westgate can leverage these available resources.
