#OurFCPS Faces: Carmen Saravia

Carmen Saravia, food services staff member at Gatehouse Administration Center, with Superintendent Brabrand

Carmen Saravia's warmth and friendliness are a special part of the Gatehouse Café's caring culture. Carmen is a Food Services kitchen manager/assistant manager and has worked at FCPS for 17 years.

Whether preparing and delivering catering orders for meetings, preparing meals, or working the cash register, Carmen's dedication to her job always shines through. She explains, “I do the job the best I can with my priority being the customers. It’s important to be nice with everyone and see them happy. They make me happy too and keep me going day by day.”

Carmen believes in learning something new every day. She says she works hard to achieve her goals, one of which was to see her sons obtain a professional career. Carmen exclaims, “The dream came true!” She believes that "nothing is easy, but we can do it."

Gatehouse Café Supervisor Shobana Sen says, “I have had the pleasure of working with Carmen for the past year and a half. I have always found her to be a people person. I love the way she is so much at ease with everyone. She does everything to ensure the clients feel at home here at Gatehouse Café.” And feel at home they do. Julie Fowler, manager of business operations, says, “Carmen has brightened every day I’ve worked at Gatehouse. I am happy for her, and I will miss her.”

Yes, that means Carmen is retiring. This is her last week. She explains, “Now is my time to take time for myself. I plan to spend more time with my family. I will thank everyone for all the support. I’ve really had a good time, and I enjoy my job and have good memories. Everybody will be in my heart.”

Shobana adds, “We will certainly miss her presence here, but we also are very excited for her new journey.”

Carmen, thank you for serving up a side of excellent customer service with our meals for 17 years. We wish you all of the best in your retirement!

Tips to Maximize Your Social Media Efforts

Here are two tips to help you get the most out of your FCPS-related social media efforts:

  1. Include clear, well-lit photos or videos in your posts to increase engagement. Ensure that students are not on their school's photo opt-out list prior to featuring them on social media.
  2. Proofread your posts. When a mistake happens, acknowledge it, apologize, correct it (if possible), or delete it and repost. Different situations may require different actions. Use your best judgment and move on!
