From the Principal's Desk....

Field Hockey

The Lady Rebels lost in the Quarterfinals of the VHSL State Field Hockey tournament this past Tuesday in the bitter cold weather at Langley.  Despite the 2-0 loss, the Lady Rebels left it all on the field with impressive play that was quite dominant at times. Once again, the FHS Field Hockey team had an amazing season posting a record of 18-3. Congratulations to the entire program.

Dear Family Fairfax,

This is my final principal’s message for some time, and I wanted to share with the Fairfax community who will be serving you over the next several weeks:

  • Maureen Keck will be serving as Acting Principal.  Maureen is currently the AP for Subschool 3.
  • Kathy Kraus-Zadrozny will be serving as the Acting Assistant Principal for Subschool 3.  Ms. Kraus-Zadrozny is currently the assessment coach at Fairfax High School.
  • Harry Van Trees will be a substitute administrator for Subschool 2.  Mr. Van Trees is a highly-regarded, retired FCPS AP.  He is filling in for Ms. Asma Junco.

The rest of our team remains the same, and they are all here to serve our community during this time and any other time.  When I return, I should be on a scooter, and I do plan to be practicing my skills as soon as the doctor clears me to do so!

As a final note, we want to include as much community news as we can in this message.  Whether it be in this text or in the “Need to Know” and “Nice to Know” sections, we work to be inclusive, but we could always use your help!  If you have pictures, know of club news or additional information, please email to Ms. Laura Beatty at LBeatty@fcps.edu with #NewsYouChoose in the subject line--The more we receive, the more inclusive we can be!

Wishing you all the best, Fairfax,

With Participation Respect Integrity Determination Empathy,

Erin B. Lenart, Ed.D.

Fairfax Pride Needs to Know:

Orchestra

Orchestra Students Ethan Walter, Elizabeth Choi, Sean Smith, Ian Lee, and Seonghyun Oh, were honored and selected to the 2019 Senior Regional Orchestra and performed in a concert this past weekend at Fairfax HS!

Northern Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra

On November 7-9, Fairfax High School hosted the Northern Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra comprised of 120 musicians. The hosting of this annual event was spear-headed by Fairfax’s Orchestra Director Gerald Fowkes. Under his outstanding leadership, string, wind and percussion students from 25 public and private schools in Fairfax and Arlington Counties came together to rehearse for 12 hours over 3 days with guest conductor Dietrich Paredes, culminating in a spectacular final concert.

The students of Fairfax County Public Schools are fortunate to have this extended and rigorous performance opportunity. Such an event, however, would not take place without the leadership of the event host. Countless hours go into hosting an event of this magnitude - arranging for adequate rehearsal space, setting up the rehearsal spaces and the logistics of equipment, enlisting and organizing parent and student volunteers, and registration and dining facilities. Gerald handled all these tasks with graciousness and the utmost level of professionalism.

Mr. Fowkes’s efforts to make the Senior Regional Orchestra event a resounding success offer clear evidence of his dedication to the profession and to the students of Fairfax County. Fairfax High School is fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated teacher.

It's Academic

Congratulations to the FHS Scholastic Bowl team who recently filmed their It’s Academic competition. Ryan Ferraris, Mary Walton Peterson, and Matthew Naka learned a lot in their competition against seasoned champions, Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Washington International. Our game will air on NBC4 at 10:30am on January 4th.

Congratulations to Renee and all the other critics who submitted reviews. All reviews will be forwarded to the director, cast, and crew of Oakton High School.

Supporting Your Student with Technology

Have you thought about what you need to do to support your student with technology?  FCPS and Fairfax High School has paired with Common Sense Media (CSM) to help you with this.  Here is the CSM Family Media Agreement to help with the discussion around Technology usage in the Schools.  Looking forward to talking with you at the next Parent Coffee in December!
