Substitute Teachers Needed
Parents & community members, have you ever considered applying to become a substitute teacher? FCPS has a significant need for substitute teachers. We regularly have days with teachers out with no available substitutes. When this occurs, we must rearrange our staff.
As a substitute teacher, you choose the days and schools in which you are willing to work. We’d love to develop a core group of Sleepy Hollow parents & community members who are available to serve as substitute teachers. If you think this might be a good opportunity for you, please click here.
Congratulations Sleepy Hollow on being selected to receive the Superintendent’s Excellence in Equity Award
Dr. Brabrand and the School Board have created a new and very important recognition to celebrate Sleepy Hollow”s progress and achievement as we continue to raise the bar and close student achievement gaps.
After a careful analysis of the Division SOL data, Sleepy Hollow has earned a Level 1 performance for each reporting group and all gap group indicators in both English and Mathematics for the 2018-19 school year. We are very proud of this accomplishment.
Sleepy Hollow will be honored at the November Region Principals meeting by Dr. Brabrand and Dr. Ivey.

November is Family Engagement Month in Virginia
The National Education Association (NEA) shares tips for parents on engaging with schools.
Students' homes and classrooms are the focal points of their learning experiences—from kindergarten through high school. Parents who work with teachers and students are critical partners in helping their child achieve success.
Parents set the example and the tone for their child's approach to education.
When parents are engaged, interested and supportive in their child's learning, the child is more likely to succeed.
Bridging the divide between what is learned in the classroom to how it is relevant in day-to-day life is a critical role for parents. It brings meaning to their child's learning experience.

Zones of Regulation
Rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, the Zones of Regulation is a framework that uses four colors to help students identify their feelings and level of alertness and provides strategies to support emotional regulation. By understanding how to notice their body’s signals, detect triggers, read social context, and consider how their behaviors impact those around them, students learn improved emotional control, sensory regulation, self-awareness, and problem-solving skills.
Participants will:
- Learn about the four Zones, corresponding feelings and visuals to reinforce this language at home.
- Explore calming and alerting strategies to teach children how to become aware of and manage their emotions.
- Discuss individual needs in a collaborate group setting.
Presented by Emily Habermeyer and Paula Augenstein, FCPS School Counselors.

November is Child Safety and Prevention Month
November is a great time to make sure your home is safe for children. Here are a few tips to help you.
-
Be mindful of plants. Choose decorative plants that are nontoxic. Common household plants can often cause serious sickness.
-
Update your exterior. Place a welcome mat outside your home or apartment. Pesticides and other toxins may be carried inside on the soles of people's shoes.
-
Helmet Safety. Make sure your child has the right size helmet and wears it every time when riding, skating or scooting. Click here for instruction on how to properly fit your child’s helmet.
-
Biking Safety. Teach your kids to make eye contact with drivers. Bikers should make sure drivers are paying attention and are going to stop before they cross the street.
