Members of Region 5 School Support visited Oak Hill the past two weeks to introduce math labsites to our students and teachers. Math labsites give teachers the opportunity to collaboratively plan and implement lessons together in the classroom with their students. Our teachers are diving into best practices around mathematics to benefit student achievement. This was great professional development for our teachers and learning experience for our students.
As many of you heard at Back to School Night, instruction in public school has changed a lot over the last 15 years. In an effort to inform and connect with our community, Oak Hill will be holding multiple Principal Coffees throughout the year to share with you our instructional practices and give you a chance to see some of them in action.
Next month, we will host our first coffee on Monday, December 9th from 9:00-10:00 in the Oak Hill Library. Staff will share with you our school improvement goals and ways we will be working to achieve them. We will conclude with a visit to see our Morning Meetings in action so that you can see how we build community within our classrooms.
If you are interested in joining us, please RSVP here by Monday, December 2. We will be capping this coffee at 25 participants in an effort to keep groups small as we are visiting classrooms. Inclusive Schools Week is celebrated annually around the country. This year we will be participating in Inclusive Schools Week from December 2-6. This entire week is to celebrate and promote acceptance and inclusion of the diverse population we have at Oak Hill. We also hope this week will encourage conversations about how we can be more accepting and appreciative of those who are different from us. The “Charting the Course” theme will reflect that we are making great strides in making positive changes in awareness of inclusion, but recognizing that we can continue to take steps towards reaching a goal of a fully inclusive school culture. Each day of the Inclusion Week, students and staff are encouraged to wear the various colors listed in the calendar section. Each color represents a word that will be discussed and linked to inclusion at Oak Hill. The celebration of Inclusive Schools Week will create a fundamental commitment to relationships among staff, students and the community of Oak Hill. #ISW2019

Fact Fluency
As students continue on their mathematics journey, memorizing facts is always a hot topic. In past years, memorization of facts in isolation was highly valued and knowing these facts quickly determined whether you were a good math student or not. Research now shows that this practice led to many students having anxiety over the memorization or poor thoughts of themselves as mathematicians.
Recalling facts is an important building block of problem solving, however, our emphasis is on the strategy and number sense related to recalling facts. In order for students to have the conceptual understanding of a mathematical task, they need to be able to reason and explain their thinking not just have the procedural context. This article by Jo Boaler, a mathematics professor at Stanford, explains this understanding very well. Food for thought!

Mrs. Wheeler, Oak Hill’s Advanced Academic Resource Teacher, will hold a parent meeting on Tuesday, December 3, at 9:00 am in the cafeteria. At this meeting, she will review the referral/screening process and provide information as to what parents and the school submit for a screening file.
Important Date: January 9, 2020 – AAP Level IV Referral forms and optional materials due to Mrs. Wheeler at Oak Hill by COB. **For 2nd grade parents, CogAt scores may not be back by January 9. If you would like your child screened for Level IV services, please do not wait for the scores or a potential letter about the second grade pool. Go ahead and submit the referral form and any optional materials in order to meet the deadline.

We wanted to share that the Chantilly Pyramid principals have agreed to have “homework free breaks” during major FCPS student holidays. Teachers are asked to not assign homework over Thanksgiving, Winter Break, and Spring Break and not have any projects due or any assessments on the first two days after the holiday. Everyone has worked hard and needs some time to relax and rejuvenate.

We have an abundance of jackets at our Lost and Found. Please encourage your child to check if they are missing an item. All items that are not claimed by December 20th will be donated. As a reminder, we do look for names in jackets before we donate. We encourage you to label your child's clothing.
Math Kangaroo
Math Kangaroo is an international mathematical competition for students in grades 1 through 12. The competition consists of a single round. Any student that is currently enrolled in grades 1 through 12 are eligible to participate.
Please note that this year Math Kangaroo will be conducted from 5.30 to 6.45pm at the Oak Hill elementary library. Also this is restricted to Oak Hill students only. Please do not share the code.

Odyssey of the Mind
Currently there are only enough coaches to support 37 students. There are currently 67 students signed up. Our organizers cannot form teams for more than 37 students given that there are not enough coaches to support the teams. That means that currently if your student was not signed up by 10/20/2019, there will not be a coach to form the team. Please support this wonderful program. It is an incredible joy to coach these very bright students! If you are a parent/guardian willing to coach, please send an e-mail to oakhill.odyssey@gmail.com and copy membership@oakhillpta.org.
If you missed signing up, we are opening the form, again with the stipulation that we need volunteers. So volunteer and sign up here. The form will close on 11/23/2019 and teams will be formed by Thanksgiving. Without volunteers can only do teams for those who signed up Oct 19 or before (first 37).

The National Geographic GeoBee (grades 4-6) interest form is out now. This was previously an in-school competition and is now after-school, so if your student would like to participate sign up here.

Oak Hill has had several teams competing in various competitions. Below are the teams and where they placed.
At Chantilly High School our 4th grade team Super LEGO City Shapers (Aarav Banait, Amelle Ahmed, Ealbu Nithilaselvan, Gautham Agilan, Langlen Heisnam, Natalie Talberg , Rene Goswami, Soraya Shamal ) won the Championship award 2nd place (Division 1) and have qualified for the states. The state tournament will be on December 7-8 at Harrisonburg, VA.
At Woodbridge Senior High School, our 5th grade team TechnoWolves (Arushi Das,Jiya Gunasekaran, Neha Ranjith, Rishan Desai, Rohan Jayakumar, Sahana Kumar, Sarvesh Palanivel, Surya Raj) won 1st place in Robot design and are advancing to state championship. The State tournament will be on December 7-8 at Harrisonburg, VA.
Oak Hill team, Just Keep Building (Ritwik Sinha, Satvik Chandran, Salban Nithilaselvan, Karthik Jayaraj, Nikhil Dev, Samik Sidhu) won 1st place in Innovation project and 2nd place in Robot performance.
